LPI Global Impact Volunteer Placement in Cusco, Peru
Description
Cusco is a city in southeastern Peru, situated in the Peruvian Andes Mountains. Cusco is home to the palace of the Inca, the Temple of the Sun, and the nearby Inca archaeological site of Machu Picchu. The first Spaniards arrived in the 1530s, with Spanish conquistador, Francisco Pizarro, discovering the city. Much of the architecture in present-day Cusco is a mix of Inca and Spanish influence.
Highlights
During the second two weeks of the month-long summer programs, LPI Global Impact students engage in volunteer activities with local organizations in their host city. Volunteer options generally fall into specific service areas. The following list includes examples of past projects: national parks, zoo, nature preserve, orphanages, food bank, community programs, after-school programs, nursery/day care, tree planting, painting, trash removal, children's museum, art museum.
The Cusco LPI office is located a few blocks from the city's main square, the Plaza de Armas, among numerous colonial buildings and cathedrals. The office serves as a convenient home base for students to relax, regroup, talk with the Cusco staff, find information about the city, use the Internet and receive tutoring. The LPI Cusco staff members are dedicated to helping make the most of students' experiences abroad.
