Program Duration
2-4 weeks
In Shanghai, LPI offers students a 3-week intensive Chinese language and culture program. Students will attend Chinese classes with professors from East China Normal University (ECNU) at the Global Education Center. ECNU professors will offer four hours of Chinese instruction daily (combining speaking, listening, reading and writing), five days per week (M-F). Upon arrival, students will be evaluated by ECNU staff for appropriate level placement. Classes are offered at the beginning and intermediate levels. Students will be in classes with LPI students only; class times will be confirmed once the students' language level is determined by the University. Tutoring services are available at the LPI office and must be requested at least 24 hours in advance. If necessary, class level changes may be made during the first few days of the academic program. Students must first inform the professor(s) and LPI resident director and staff of the desired change.
LPI students will enjoy a range of cultural activities, which may include visits to museum and other historic site; talks by Chinese-speaking professors, community leaders and personalities; manual and physical activities such as calligraphy, Taiji Quan (Tai-Chi), kite flying, music, dance, hiking, swimming, bicycling and soccer; market visits; host-family encounters; and other activities in and around Shanghai. Activities are designed to challenge students to practice and develop Chinese language skills and to explore the host culture.
Weekend excursions include trips to the cities of Hangzhou, Nanjing, the Water Villages of Jiangsu, and a homestay experience

LPI, the high school division of International Studies Abroad (ISA) was established in 1989 to provide an academically challenging and culturally thorough study abroad program for U.S. high school students. Based in Austin, Texas, LPI reaches out to provide study abroad opportunities to students from across the United States. LPI works closely with fully-accredited foreign universities and the LPI resident staff in each program location in order to provide cultural activities, tutoring services, language exchanges, volunteer opportunities, and numerous possibilities for improving language performance. Through LPI, students are able to equip themselves with a working knowledge of a foreign language, earn college credit, experience another culture and explore the area around their program city through cultural excursions.
