  • Description

Our volunteers in Chiang Rai (near the borders with Laos and Burma) work with young people at three different childcare centres, including one for pupils with special needs. The students often belong to hill tribes and do not have Thai citizenship, which means they are disenfranchised and do not have access to a full school education. Adult members of local hill tribes also require English in order to work with in the tourist industry.

Resources are scant and local teachers work under considerable pressure. At the childcare centres, much of the volunteers' time is spent supporting teachers who, among other duties, are teaching Thai to those pupils for whom it is not their native tongue.

It is not essential to have teaching qualifications or experience, as training will be given. The teaching week stretches from Tuesday to Saturday and will normally end with a meeting to divide teaching jobs among the volunteers in Thailand.

  • Highlights

    * Love Volunteers is a not-for-profit organisation that provides fun, rewarding, safe and affordable volunteering opportunities in developing countries around the world.

    * Since Love Volunteers is a not-for-profit organization, it is one of the most affordable ways to help out in a developing country while being immersed in the local culture.

    * On the day your program starts you will be picked up from Chang Rai. Here, local staff will introduce you to the team with whom you will be working, and will explain how the program works and what you can expect. You'll also have a chance to meet other volunteers in Thailand.

    * You will stay in a self-contained community in a dormitory. Longer-term volunteers experience at least one homestay in a hill tribe village. Dorms are separated by gender, with cold showers and western style toilets. Meals are provided on the five working days per week. On days off volunteers in Thailand will prepare food themselves after a trip to a supermarket on Saturday evening.
