Volunteers are invited to teach English to children and young people attending primary and secondary schools in La Ceiba and the surrounding area. Due to the poverty to be found here and the shortage of native English teachers, volunteers are invaluable in aiding pupils to master English grammar and vocabulary. With around thirty in each class, volunteers need basic Spanish language ability to communicate successfully. Volunteer teachers give lessons to groups of all levels as well as assisting the school-based teacher. Some help with extracurricular activities is requested too.
* Love Volunteers is a not-for-profit organisation that provides fun, rewarding, safe and affordable volunteering opportunities in developing countries around the world.
* Since Love Volunteers is a not-for-profit organization, it is one of the most affordable ways to help out in a developing country while being immersed in the local culture.
* Participants are accommodated throughout their stay with a host family. The family is typically located in the same area as the programs. They provide the volunteer with a private room and private bathroom, three meals per day and companionship, including many opportunities for the volunteer to practise his or her constantly improving Spanish.
* Volunteers are met at La Ceiba airport before being introduced to their host family. The following morning, orientation sessions are held and the itinerary presented. Also covered are details of Honduras' history, the people, customs and geography, as well as safety and health issues and "do's and don'ts" of staying in Honduras. A typically Honduran lunch is followed by walking tour of the city tour, building in a visit to the location of the specific placement for which the volunteer has signed up.
* Participants then have the entire weekend free, time which can be spent enjoying Honduran destinations, such as the Bay Islands or La Moskitia or exploring the local area, La Ceiba, named after a single spectacular tree specimen, now sadly removed. This part of Honduras was originally settled by Pech indigenous people, followed by an ethnic group, the GarÃfunas who arrived from Trujillo. Spanish occupation only began in 1846, and the French soon followed. The Dole Food Company set up a banana exporting business here, becoming the town's main lifeline. Outdoor activities such as canoeing and rafting, and visits to butterfly farms are easily accessed here. La Ceiba also has a much talked-about night scene.

Wow! Such a humbling and incredible journey. It really put things in perspective for me. Love Volunteers and their local partner did a great job. If you're heading to Tanzania say 'Hello' from me.
