Description

Doing your bit in an orphanage or other childcare facility is rewarding, sometimes chaotic, but always great fun. Childcare projects may take place in either an orphanage or an after school program, community centre or shelter. All of our childcare projects work with severely underprivileged children. The children require a lot of care, attention and most importantly, companionship.

You will assist with organising activities for the children as well as helping them with their school work. We encourage you to use your skills and interests to develop workshops such as music and dance, jewellery making, aerobics, arts and crafts, etc.

You will be supported by our in-country coordinators but they may not always be on site at your childcare program. These projects are severely understaffed and underfunded, which is why they are in urgent need of volunteers. The children are always happy to see you and are very welcoming to our volunteers in Peru. You truly are needed and appreciated at these projects.

Volunteers in Peru who do not speak Spanish should take the affordable Spanish courses offered by our partners in Peru.

* You will stay in either a volunteer house or with a local Peruvian family while volunteering in Cusco. The volunteer house is filled first, but you can guarantee a place with a local family by paying an additional USD 35 (Euro 25) per week. The volunteer house has many of the benefits of staying with a family, but with less rules and no curfew.

* Upon your arrival in Peru you will spend a day finding out about your host country, city and family. Our local team will tell you everything you need to know about the local customs, safety, rules and expectations and, of course, about your volunteering in Peru experience. You'll be given a walking tour of the area in and around our partner's facilities and get a chance to meet other volunteers and plan your "extra-curricular" activities while in Peru..

* You can choose to volunteer in Peru at the weekend if you want, or otherwise you can visit other cities etc in Peru. Or just relax at home or in a cafe. Long weekends can be easily arranged locally to allow trips further afield (Machu Picchu being the most popular in this part of the world).

Qualifications

- Volunteers in Peru must be at least 18 years old at the start of the placements (unless accompanied by an adult).
- For orphanage placements Spanish is not essential, but a basic grasp of the language is very helpful.

No matter what your level of Spanish we recommend you take the very affordable Spanish courses offered by our team locally.
