Description

Placements are either in state-run clinics in Cusco or in orphanages. Clinics care for 180 patients per day, including 10-20 emergencies. You will be working alongside approximately 12-15 doctors and 5-7 nurses. Your duties are a little more onerous than pre-med requirements and will involve: topico - cleaning rooms, giving injections and sutures; consultation - assisting doctors with physicals and taking medical histories; and campaigns - giving vaccinations, taking medical histories and drawing blood samples.

Medical volunteers in Peru should understand that independence in medical projects will always be determined by the level of training and expertise, Spanish level, age, ability to take initiative and duration of the program.

Note: You are required to bring your own basic medical supplies, including white coat, scrubs and stethoscope.

* Upon your arrival in Peru you will spend a day finding out about your host country, city and family. Our local team will tell you everything you need to know about the local customs, safety, rules and expectations and, of course, about your volunteering in Peru experience. You'll be given a walking tour of the area in and around our partner's facilities and get a chance to meet other volunteers and plan your "extra-curricular" activities while in Peru..

* You can choose to volunteer in Peru at the weekend if you want, or otherwise you can visit other cities etc in Peru. Or just relax at home or in a cafe. Long weekends can be easily arranged locally to allow trips further afield (Machu Picchu being the most popular in this part of the world).

Qualifications

- Volunteers in Peru must be at least 18 years old at the start of the placements (unless accompanied by an adult)
- Volunteers in Peru undertaking medical placements should have an intermediate level of Spanish.

No matter what your level of Spanish we recommend you take the very affordable Spanish courses offered by our team locally.
