Description

With the complete absence of alternative healthcare for members of under-privileged communities, a program which delivers yoga sessions is a greatly welcome and well-attended solution. The project takes place at a wellness centre serving indigenous local people. The centre has over 10 years experience of providing services to people on low incomes. These include a sweat lodge, massage therapies, nutrition classes and homeopathic medicine.

Volunteers in Mexico work with children at the centre, focusing on yoga, meditation and relaxation techniques. The tasks assigned can also include helping with creative skills such as art, organising games and serving fruit and juice after class. There is great demand among local children wishing to attend these activities.

* Upon arrival in Mexico, after being driven to the volunteering location, there is the option either to rest or get acquainted with their host family. Following this, the main elements of orientation are: an introduction to the basics about Mexico as a country, facts about the city, local customs, safety, rules and expectations. The local team will also tell you everything you need to know about your volunteering experience, how the work is planned and the program's goals and objectives.

* Volunteers in Mexico have the evenings free when they might enjoy eating dinner with their host family, going out with other volunteers downtown or perhaps getting to dine at another nearby home. On occasion, it will be necessary to attend an evaluation meeting. To gain a full weekend for travel and/or sightseeing (and depending on the length of the individual volunteer's program), some flexibility is possible as regards taking a Saturday off.

Qualifications

The only requirements are that volunteers in Mexico should be willing to work flexibly and as part of a team. Additionally, those taking part in community development projects need to be capable of doing physical work. Previous experience is not essential.
