  • Highlights

    Linfield includes:
    - A residential campus in McMinnville, Oregon
    - A campus in Portland, Oregon, specializing in Nursing and Health Sciences
    - A Division of Continuing Education offers a set of adult degree courses online and at eight sites in Oregon.

    The Liberal Arts

Students in all three programs complete a liberal arts curriculum. The general education requirement called The Linfield Curriculum fosters the development of wholly educated individuals through a series of courses spanning the arts and humanities, natural sciences, and social and behavioral sciences. The Linfield Curriculum encourages inquiry, analysis, and imagination, habits of mind that provide the foundation for reasoned action, wonder and continued learning in all aspects of life.

    Pioneer Heritage

Linfield is one of the oldest colleges in the Pacific Northwest. It traces its roots to a time of expansion and excitement on the Western frontier. The Baptist College at McMinnville was chartered in 1858 by the Oregon Territorial Legislature. It was later named McMinnville College.

The name was changed to Linfield College in 1922 in memory of a Baptist minister whose widow, Frances Ross Linfield, gave property worth more than 250,000 dollars to the college. Six years later, Linfield was fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.

  • University Attributes

    The College-

Linfield, founded in 1849, is an independent, selective, comprehensive college of arts and sciences, fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. It has been nationally recognized for its strong teaching faculty, outstanding science programs and international emphasis. The academic program features a broad liberal arts core curriculum, thirty-six major programs and encourages internships and undergraduate research. The student body of 1600 men and women represents 28 American states and 34 nations. With more that 100 distinguished faculty members, we maintain a faculty to student ratio of 1:13, and provide Linfield students with the kind of personal attention that fosters learning. The College encourages study abroad and welcomes the presence of international students.

    The Campus and Climate-

Linfields 100 acre campus is in McMinnville, a friendly city of over 23,000 people, at the northern end of Oregons lush Willamette Valley. Portland, a cosmopolitan city of more than 1.3 million, rich in cultural activities, and center for international trade, is an hours drive to the north. The spectacular Oregon coast is an hours drive to the west, and the outdoor recreational and wilderness areas of the Oregon Cascades are two hours to the east.

Extreme temperatures are rare in our area. Some freezing weather is experienced most winters, but prolonged freezing temperatures are seldom recorded. Very little snow falls in the Willamette Valley, and the winter rains are usually gentle. Summers are dry and pleasant, though some periods of hot weather may occur. It is wise to prepare for varying temperatures by bringing clothing for both warm and cool weather, plus rainwear for the rainy winter season. Within the walls of a brick building constructed in 1882. Or beneath a dense canopy of trees in the rain forests of Costa Rica. Wherever Linfield students are engaged in academics, amazing things occur. Linfield College challenges students to prepare for world citizenship through the study of the liberal arts and sciences. Our faculty provides genuine concern and care for student progress and well being, making our college a safe, stimulating, and limitless place to grow. The academic goal at Linfield is to help students acquire the knowledge and develop the skills and values that will enable them to
become effective members of the world community--wherever they may choose to learn.
