Lexia in Berlin is affiliated with Die Neue Schule, with instruction provided by the distinguished faculty of the Freie Universitat Berlin, Technische Universitat, and Humboldt Universat. Our program also includes guest lectures from government officials, artists, filmmakers, architects, and representatives of Berlins ethnic communities. To explore Germany's role in the European Union, students attend events sponsored by the European Commission, embassies, and grassroots initiatives, including workshops, lectures, and weekend seminars on European integration.
The Visual Culture program works with the Atelierhaus Mengerzeile, an artists' cooperative founded in 1993. Located in a former piano factory next to where the Berlin Wall once divided Treptow and Neukolln, the Atelierhaus offers students the chance to interact with international artists. Classes also meet at the FU, in museums and galleries, and in the Lexia Center in Schoneberg, a central and friendly neighborhood filled with galleries, cafes, specialty shops, and music stores. Our center, an updated industrial loft in a fin-de-siecle brick building, offers generous studio, classroom, workshop, and office space, including WLAN internet, projection equipment, student lounge, and reading area. In addition to Lexia, the building houses a dozen architecture and design offices, artists and galleries, families and students, flamenco dance and Japanese gymnastics studios, bookbinders, a flower shop, and bakery. Lexia's student services coordinator also introduces students to Berlins rich public culture with theater and concerts, open-air markets, and outstanding parks and lakes.
Lexia encourages interaction and dialogue between our students and German faculty and students. Berlin scholars, artists, and students provide Lexia participants with direct access to the culture. No prior knowledge of German is required, as courses are offered in English. Intensive language training helps students to develop the skills and confidence to live and study in Berlin.
Lexia offers the opportunity to engage in an in-depth study of Berlin and Germany: its history, arts, politics and culture. Lexia's individualized and personal approach, combines intense academic study with maximum immersion into the local culture and community.
