Lexia's program is hosted at the Istituto Venezia, Venice's oldest language and cultural institute. Through the Istituto Venezia's affiliation with the Universita degli Studi di Venezia, Lexia participants receive access to libraries, facilities, inexpensive student cafeterias, transportation passes and cultural resources through the city.
Lexia in Venice is an interdisciplinary cultural studies program designed to introduce students to the language, urban environment, history, politics, economics, art, architecture, literature, religion and social issues of Italy and Venice, placing both in the broader context of Western and Central Europe and the Mediterranean region. Coursework, language training, excursions, research projects and field-study exercises help students to understand the multi-dimensional complexity of Italian and Venetian culture and society. Intensive language training is provided, thereby helping students develop the skills and confidence to live, study and integrate into the Italian setting. However, no prior knowledge of Italian is required, as all classes, except the language course itself, are taught in English. In order to maximize exposure to local and Italian culture during this ongoing period of economic, social and political transformation in Italy, the program fully supports and encourages social and academic interaction and dialogue between Lexia participants and Italian faculty, professionals, students and other residents.
The Lexia in Venice semester program is composed of several components, some of which run concurrently, while others follow in a sequence. The basic components of the program are:
- Orientation
- Italian Language Course
- Area Studies Culture and Environment Seminar
- Research Methods Seminar
- Field Research Project
- Review and Evaluation
All components of the Lexia program are required of all students, and when completed successfully, yield 14-16 semester or 21-24 quarter credits per term. The program is designed to be academically challenging, but it allows ample time for students to become acquainted with local culture and a number of free weekends for independent travel in Italy or Europe.
