Based at the University of the Western Cape, the Lexia in Cape Town program introduces students to the language, history, politics, socio-economics, and culture of South Africa, placing this fascinating country in the regional context of Southern Africa. Coursework, language training, excursions, research projects and the experience of living in a home-stay help students to understand the local culture and to confront the issues facing this nation. The program strongly supports interaction and dialogue between Lexia participants and South African faculty and students. To this end, local faculty are involved with the program from the very beginning, giving Lexia participants immediate and direct access to the culture. No prior knowledge of Afrikaans or Xhosa is required, as all courses are taught in English. However, intensive language training is provided, thereby helping students to develop the skills and confidence to live, study, and conduct research in a foreign setting. Social and academic encounters with local students, as well as organized field trips, all contribute to a greater understanding of this country still in the midst of great economic, social, and political transformation.
The Lexia in Cape Town semester program is composed of several components, some of which run concurrently, while others follow in sequence. The basic components of the program are:
- Orientation
- Afrikaans and/or Xhosa Language Course
- South African Area Studies Seminar
- Research Methods Seminar
- Field Research Project
- Review and Evaluation
All components of the Lexia program are required of all students and, when completed, successfully yield 16 semester or 24 quarter credits per semester. The program is designed to be academically challenging and demanding, while allowing ample time for students to become acquainted with the local culture.
Through the Field Research Project, Lexia can accommodate almost any major or field of interest at all overseas sites. With the exception of language classes, the primary language of instruction is English. Unpaid internships and volunteer work are offered as a supplement to the academic program.
