Living in Lima

Overall, I thought this was a great program. It was very well organized, with things like housing, health care, and setting up bank accounts all taken care of for us. The apartment came with a cleaning lady, and the salary was more than sufficient to live on.

The work itself grew repetitive after a while, and the hours were long, but no one minded too much if you needed to take a walk or something to clear your head every few hours.

Obviously, in a job like this, you're taking the job to have a chance to live in Peru more than for the job itself. On that front, I was definitely not disappointed. The program provides 4 hours a week of spanish lessons, and I went from 0 spanish to 'able to travel and converse easily with people' spanish in six months. Those are very good classes.

Living in Lima is a lot of fun, as there's a number of different districts to explore. Weekend trips are possible to a variety of places if you have energy and inclination. Buses in Peru aren't too expensive, and they criss cross the whole country, so travel anywhere is financially feasible.

I would definitely recommend this program for anyone who wants a chance to live and travel in south america. The work isn't the most intellectually stimulating in the world, but the rest of your time there more than makes up for it.

KOECH Program: January-June 2013

I participated in this program from January-June 2013 and overall I was very happy with the job and the experience.

The job entails researching and writing informational reference pages and lifestyle articles for websites, as well as some proofreading and editing work. The workload’s not crazy, although the hours are long, and there is space for you to put your stamp on the creative output.

The company provides interns with an apartment in the heart of Miraflores – the most upmarket district in Lima and the tourist hub – with shops, cafés, restaurants and bars on its doorstep. The apartment is really nice, like a hotel suite with cream carpets, double beds, etc. and the building has a clubhouse with a gym and a pool. It’s about 10 minutes walk from work, 20 to the clifftops and the coast and a 20 minute bus ride to downtown Lima. The salary is also enough to be able to live quite comfortably in Lima.

The program has other perks as well, including 4 hours of Spanish tuition a week tailored to your level and 3-4 weeks of vacation time, which if you haven’t been to Peru before I would recommend maybe spending in Cuzco/Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and Iquitos (the Amazon). However, in my time I traveled to Ecuador, Chile and Easter Island, so Lima is also a good base for other travels around Latin America.

The only downside I can think of is that it’s a 45-50 hour work week, which is average for Peruvian standards but which was sometimes draining for me, especially with Spanish lessons two evenings a week, so you really have to have a lot of energy and enthusiasm to be able to make the most of your free time there.

However, the perks of the internship more than make up for the long hours, and it is a pretty unique opportunity to work in Peru, gain experience in copywriting and travel South America at the same time – I’d do it again in an instant.
