The KIIS summer program in Tanzania offers students a great opportunity to explore the rich historical, cultural, and linguistic traditions of this Sub-Saharan African nation. Popularly referred to as the Land of Kilimanjaro (Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain rise in the world), Tanzania is a stable and peaceful country of over 40 million people. The four-week program is based in Dar-es-Salaam (Haven of Peace), Tanzania's largest city and its economic, political, and cultural center. This program is designed to expose participants to a broad range of topics including Swahili culture and history, East African politics, and public health efforts in the management of AIDS. There are no prerequisites for this program.
Students have the option of learning Swahili/Kiswahili (classified as a critical language by the U.S. State Department) in small classes taught by local Tanzanian instructors at the University of Dar-es-Salaam. Students may also explore the history of Tanzania, paying close attention to the evolution of Swahili society and Kiswahili as a trade and later administrative language. Students learn why Tanzania's neighbors- Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and even Kenya- have all experienced episodes of ethnic violence, genocide, and civil war, yet Tanzania has been spared these trials and upheavals and remains a model of stability in East Africa. Unfortunately, like its neighbors, Tanzania has not been immune to the AIDS scourge that continues to devastate Sub-Saharan Africa. One of the program's courses examines the role of Kiswahili in the spread and management of the AIDS epidemic in Tanzania. Visits to AIDS management organizations, the Clinton Foundation offices, and select AIDS projects located in Dar-es-Salaam enable students to better understand the disease and the role played by language, politics, culture, and economics over the past two-plus decades.
The program includes a number of exciting group excursions to several Tanzanian sites: (1) Zanzibar - a 90-minute speed boat adventure from Dar es Salaam across the Indian Ocean, important historical sites, stone town preservation, and clove plantations; (2) Bagamoyo - a UNESCO world heritage site on the slave trade route and market and the preservation of historical buildings, (3) Arusha - a view of Mount Kilimanjaro, national parks, historical sites, a Maasai village tour; and (4) Dar es Salaam - fish auction markets, AIDS orphanages, National Museum, and cultural events. Free weekends are available for personal or small group excursions within and outside Dar es Salaam.

The Kentucky Institute for International Studies is a consortium of colleges and universities dedicated to providing quality international education. KIIS is founded on the conviction that an international experience should be part of the education of as many people as possible. KIIS programs have four primary objectives: (1) to establish high-quality, low-cost, academically sound international study programs for students; (2) to provide faculty from member institutions a means for professional growth; (3) to create language and culture programs for professionals and develop links with their counterparts in foreign countries; and (4) to promote the study of foreign languages. KIIS also seeks to develop new opportunities for international experiences which meet the needs of students, faculty, academic institutions, and community organizations, always taking into consideration the changing times and shifting demands of a global society.
