Location
Spain: Madrid, Segovia
Term
Summer
The program in Spain will last five weeks and will take place in Madrid, Spain's vibrant capital, and in Segovia, a charming, provincial capital in the foothills of the Guadarrama mountains, only 60 miles to the north of Madrid. Students will attend classes five days a week, and there will be weekly excursions. Students participating in the program will be required to have completed at least 12 hours of college-level Spanish, or the equivalent. Students are expected to speak Spanish on excursions, at group meals, and in all public places.
In Madrid, students can visit the world-famous Prado Museum, the Royal Palace, and many other museums and historical sites. They can also experience Spanish dance, music, and theater, and they can explore the countless shops, restaurants, tascas, terrazas, and discos. In Segovia, students may explore the city's Roman and medieval past and venture into the surrounding areas of Old Castile. Segovia also has a lively nightlife. Group excursions on comfortable, chartered buses are scheduled from both cities to such places as Toledo, Salamanca, and Avila. Midway through the program, a four-day free weekend will be set aside during which students may wish to travel to more distant parts of Spain.

The Kentucky Institute for International Studies is a consortium of colleges and universities dedicated to providing quality international education. KIIS is founded on the conviction that an international experience should be part of the education of as many people as possible. KIIS programs have four primary objectives: (1) to establish high-quality, low-cost, academically sound international study programs for students; (2) to provide faculty from member institutions a means for professional growth; (3) to create language and culture programs for professionals and develop links with their counterparts in foreign countries; and (4) to promote the study of foreign languages. KIIS also seeks to develop new opportunities for international experiences which meet the needs of students, faculty, academic institutions, and community organizations, always taking into consideration the changing times and shifting demands of a global society.
