The KIIS program in Germany focuses on rich exposure to the language and culture in Munich and the picturesque towns and beautiful countryside of Bavaria. The program takes place in a village on the outskirts of Munich, the city known as the "Weltstadt mit Herz" (city with a heart). The heart of the city--the pedestrian mall around Marienplatz and the Viktualienmarkt--bustles with activity, yet one is never far from the tranquility of Munich's great park, the English Garden, or the relaxed atmosphere of the many beer gardens.
The program is designed for students with two years or more of college-level German. Homestays are the hallmark of the Germany program and make it truly a venture in inter-cultural living. Students live individually with German families, many of whom themselves have student-age children, in the Olching/Esting/Grabenzell suburban area of Munich, learning firsthand about daily life in Germany, its institutions, social customs, and cultural practices. Normally students go to parties and outings, attend cultural and sporting events, and sometimes take weekend day-trips with their host families.

The Kentucky Institute for International Studies is a consortium of colleges and universities dedicated to providing quality international education. KIIS is founded on the conviction that an international experience should be part of the education of as many people as possible. KIIS programs have four primary objectives: (1) to establish high-quality, low-cost, academically sound international study programs for students; (2) to provide faculty from member institutions a means for professional growth; (3) to create language and culture programs for professionals and develop links with their counterparts in foreign countries; and (4) to promote the study of foreign languages. KIIS also seeks to develop new opportunities for international experiences which meet the needs of students, faculty, academic institutions, and community organizations, always taking into consideration the changing times and shifting demands of a global society.
