Summer
The KIIS summer program in Japan offers students an opportunity to discover one of the world's most sophisticated and dynamic nations. A sublime blend of tradition and technology, Japan seamlessly fuses modern art and ultra-high-speed railways with ancient temples and shrines.
The four-week program begins at Nara, Japan's capital in the 8th century, and moves to Tsu, near the Ise Shrine. Located near the mouth of the Ano river, Tsu is one of Japan's educational centers while Nara is home to the striking Todaiji Temple and Isuien Garden. Indeed, eight historical monuments in Nara are World Heritage sites.
From Tsu students travel by Shinkansen (Bullet Train) for a full week to Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Himeji. In addition to classroom instruction, students participate in a number of fascinating excursions. For instance in Tokyo, students visit the Kabuki Theater and a Japanese university and experience first-hand Japanese traditional arts (i.e. calligraphy, a tea ceremony, and flower arranging). The program then concludes with a week in Kyoto, the ancient capital until the 19th century and culturally the richest and historically most significant place in Japan. Graced by beautiful palaces, gardens, temples, and shrines, including the renowned Grand Pavilion, Kyoto is a site to behold.

The Kentucky Institute for International Studies is a consortium of colleges and universities dedicated to providing quality international education. KIIS is founded on the conviction that an international experience should be part of the education of as many people as possible. KIIS programs have four primary objectives: (1) to establish high-quality, low-cost, academically sound international study programs for students; (2) to provide faculty from member institutions a means for professional growth; (3) to create language and culture programs for professionals and develop links with their counterparts in foreign countries; and (4) to promote the study of foreign languages. KIIS also seeks to develop new opportunities for international experiences which meet the needs of students, faculty, academic institutions, and community organizations, always taking into consideration the changing times and shifting demands of a global society.
