The program in Ecuador is designed to take full advantage of the diversity of this fascinating South American Country. During the month-long program, students will participate in activities associated with their selected courses, including lectures by KIIS faculty members, lectures and presentations by in-country experts, video presentations, visits to colonist and indigenous villages, and hikes into both primary and secondary rainforests.
The goal is to take advantage of local expertise, wherever possible, and to integrate outside field excursions with course content materials.
There are no language requirements for participation in the program. However, students are strongly encouraged to acquire at least some conversational Spanish prior to the trip, since it will make for a far more interesting and enriching experience.
Ecuador is a country of diverse geography, with snowcapped volcanic peaks, lush rainforests, palm-fringed beaches, and an extensive Pacific coast that includes the luxuriant Guayas lowlands. The highlight of the program for many will be the visit to the Galapagos Island. The Galapagos Islands are 600 miles west of the mainland and have been declared a World Natural Heritage site by UNESCO. Ecuador has the greatest diversity of species of any country of comparable size, and the varieties of flora and fauna will amaze. Students must be aware that some of the activities and field excursions associated with this program are both physically strenuous and require considerable agility.

The Kentucky Institute for International Studies is a consortium of colleges and universities dedicated to providing quality international education. KIIS is founded on the conviction that an international experience should be part of the education of as many people as possible. KIIS programs have four primary objectives: (1) to establish high-quality, low-cost, academically sound international study programs for students; (2) to provide faculty from member institutions a means for professional growth; (3) to create language and culture programs for professionals and develop links with their counterparts in foreign countries; and (4) to promote the study of foreign languages. KIIS also seeks to develop new opportunities for international experiences which meet the needs of students, faculty, academic institutions, and community organizations, always taking into consideration the changing times and shifting demands of a global society.
