Volunteers visit the pre-school every morning to assist the local teachers and educate the children in creative ways. Volunteers teach in small groups of about 8 children and if they are interested or comfortable, can chose to work one-on-one with children who display learning difficulties or require extra attention. For the English classes, we are currently teaching a group of about fifty students, ranging in age from young adults to middle-aged adults. Volunteers are responsible for making the lesson plans which are always interactive and fun with the use of flash cards, games, objects and worksheets. Volunteers encourage active participation from the students by reading out loud, role-playing writing on the board, doing written work etc.
After spending the morning at the preschool, your afternoons will be spent working on a community initiative. Some of the projects that currently require assistance are our orphan care and development projects, our language club on Saturday mornings, home building as well as helping to paint the local school, assisting in beach clean ups, maintaining the farm at the preschool and also an opportunity for a cultural immersion day.
During evening times and after work you can relax on the beautiful beach which is on your door step, go for a swim in the pool or wander off into town where there are some fantastic local seafood restaurants. At weekends there are plenty of things to do from Scuba Diving, sailing safaris to Bazaruto Island, deep sea fishing or horse back riding on the beach.
Requirements: age 17+
No specific qualifications are required. We do suggest you do some background reading and research into HIV and preventative methods. Any experience of working with children will also be a benefit to your time on the project. The main thing is to be enthusiastic with a willingness to be involved in everything we do here in Mozambique.
