  • Description

Africa is a huge and inspiring continent covering 20% of the earths land area and has the 2nd largest population in the world with around 925 million people. With its strong individual tribal traditions there are over 1000 languages in Africa.

Wildlife in Africa is a major focal point of the continent with some of the most impressive wildlife in the world with lions, Rhinos, Elephants, and Antelopes spanning the Serengeti of Kenya and Mountain Gorillas living in the thick misty Jungles of Rwanda and Congo.

Kaya projects are geared towards preservation and rehabilitation of the wildlife, education and teaching, as well as medical and HIV awareness. A number of opportunities are available in various locations.

If on your placement you wish to start up your own sub-project, a reasonable amount of funding will be provided. An example is: one volunteer arranged a basketball tournament for the street children where funding was provided for team shirts and trophies. This is a good chance to make your own lasting mark on a project and the people of your chosen country.

  • Highlights

    Zambezi River

The Zambezi passes through six African countries and is Africa's fourth largest river. It's power has carved the spectacular Victoria Falls and the zigzagging Batoka Gorge. What's nice about the Zambezi is it is less developed and has many protected areas along it's banks. The river and the falls lay host to some exciting activities like rafting, abseiling, bungi jumping and river safaris.

    South Luangwa National Park

This magnificent game reserve contains some of the most intense and concentrated wildlife populations in the world. The Luangwa River is the most intact major river system in Africa and is the life blood of the park. The now famous 'walking safari' originated in this park and is still one of the finest ways to experience this pristine wilderness first hand. The changing seasons add to the Park's richness ranging from dry, bare bushveld in the winter to a lush green wonderland in the summer months. There are 60 different animal species and over 400 different bird species. The only notable exception is the rhino, sadly poached to extinction.

    Bungee jump at Victoria Falls

With Victoria Falls as a backdrop, this is arguably the best bungee jump in the world, with a 111 metre plummet towards the Zambezi River. The Victoria Falls Bungee jump has a 100% safety record - and is available 365 days per year. Challenge the limits of the mind and test the edge of fear by leaping off the impressive bridge, with the Falls behind and the mighty Zambezi below.

    Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa. It's made up of 3 inactive volcanoes with the highest standing at 19,331 ft. It remains the highest peak that a regular tourist can climb. It will take 5 days to climb up and down, and you will cover over 80 km - still a great test of your endurance. Throughout the climb, you will pass through the tropical forests and up to an expanse of open moorland. Moving closer to the summit, you will pass through the unpredictable alpine desert landscape made up of rocks, ice and temperature fluctuations. Once at the summit you get an unbelievable view of the wild plains of Tanzania.
