Join Kaya's effort in Community Development Projects such as Women's Empowerment for Costa Rica. This project began after scores of women were left destitute during the Costa Rican coffee growing crisis, as many rural women had no other skills or source of income. Through this programme women gain skills and knowledge to diversify their income, as well as the confidence and guidance to succeed in their newfound goals.
Mother and Child Nutrition in Costa Rica
Kaya volunteers work with women who have been battered or abandoned and need security for themselves and their kids; with children aged 12 and under who come from broken homes or whose parents suffer from alcoholism or drug addictions; and men and women over 60 from low-income backgrounds. The main objective is to improve the quality of life of those in need by providing food, education, work assistance and guidance.
Work with Women and Family Victims of Prostitution
Work on a project that helps women and family victims of prostitution. The project focuses on restoring human rights through a holistic recovery program aimed at re-incorporating people working in prostitution into the labour market and to heal their deeply rooted scars. The project also helps to address the family and social situation by offering support to adult women who have a desire to leave prostitution behind to provide their family a better lifestyle.
Help Women Empowerment on an Orchid Cooperative in Costa Rica
The women's Project for Orchid Production began due to the coffee crisis in Costa Rica that occurred in recent years. Many families in the Costa Rican countryside depend exclusively on coffee as their source for income. With fluctuations both in coffee prices and demand, a small drop in either of these can severely affect the producers income. Due to the coffee crisis, a group of women in the Atenas area decided to diversify their income base and start a business growing orchids and making compost. They grow the flowers for local sale (within the country) and for export.
Care and Physiotherapy for the Elderly
Volunteering abroad with Kaya can mean a whole host of things for you as a volunteer. If you have an interest in the health and well-being of Costa Ricas elderly population and care about quality of life and helping to make a difference to it, then this is the project for you. Working to provide a family atmosphere of acceptance and respect, this project fully addresses the needs of the elderly and promotes their skills ultimately for a better future for the residents of San Joses care homes. Health and deontological care are also given to the residents alongside physical and recreational activities and you can get involved with helping to shape and impact the time that they are now living.
Rural Wildlife and Community Work
Are you interested in volunteering on a rural wildlife, environmental and community based project in the real Costa Rica? Join us on the Central Pacific Coast for a project of a lifetime. The land on which you will be working is a former banana plantation which used to be owned by the United Fruit Company. The land has now been sold to local farm workers who have set up an ecotourism cooperative and whom are living and working together for a common cause. Their incredible work have also led to the formation of a local animal rescue centre which provides rehabilitation services for abandoned, maltreated and injured animals from the South Pacific region of Costa Rica.
Costa Rica Spring Break Volunteering Week
Do something amazing with your Spring Break this year! Join us in San Jose for a week of helping orphaned and underprivileged children in the citys orphanage and day care centres - organising games and activities, helping with refurbishment work and making materials for the childrens play and studies . Then take a day-trip to Costa Ricas famous Arenal Volcano and Baldi hot Springs to see some of the sights before heading home.
Costa Rica, or "rich coast," boasts a warm climate, pristine beaches on the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, active volcanoes, and contrasting landscapes. With such eco-diversity it is easy to see why Costa Rica is the best-traveled nation in the Central Americas with 1.9 million visitors in 2007. Often called the land of peace, it has the oldest democracy in Latin America and has more than 100 years of political stability. It is also one of the most people- and environment-conscious nations in the world, ranked No. 1 in the Americas on the Human Development Index and No. 5 in the world on the Environmental Performance Index.
Bungee the Old Colorado River Bridge:
Standing at 265 feet the Colorado River Bridge offers one of the tallest and most beautiful jumps in the Americas. The old bridge is located an hour west of San Jose where several companies offer bundled packages, which generally include pick-up and one jump. So if jumping headfirst off a bridge in the middle of a tropical forest catches your imagination then put bungee jumping on your list.
Learn to Surf:
Costa Rica has some of the best surfing anywhere in the world, with fantastic warm tropical water surfing. Surf the beach breaks, reef breaks, point breaks and river mouth breaks on the Pacific or Caribbean side of the country. Whether you're a beginner or a pro there is a wave for everyone.
Whale and Dolphin Watching:
The shallow warm waters create the ideal ecosystem for humpback whales, killer whales, Pilot Whales and bottlenose, spinner and spotted dolphins. Humpback whales come from two hemispheres to breed and spend the longest period of the year here. It's the premier location to see these amazing mammals up close.
There are lots of young people who work with the participants so it will be a great opportunity to interact with locals while helping them improve the community.
Experience and passion for working in the community and interacting with the people are needed. Participants must also possess enthusiasm and a willingness to learn about the environment and the place's culture.
