  • Description

As a volunteer in the Orphanage you will help to educate and play with small children, some of whom have lost their parents as a result of AIDS. The types of activities you will be involved in will be; teaching basic lessons about different themes and subjects, reading books to the children, playing games, singing songs, doing drawings with them and helping with washing hands before meals, as well as feeding the babies and children.

You will also help raise awareness on preventing the spread of the HIV/AIDS virus in the local community. Working together with our Volunteer Coordinator with experience in teaching this subject, you will be involved in teaching adults and children about the virus. During your placement, you will visit both schools and community centres. During these visits you will explain through a simple method, approved by the UN, what the HIV/AIDS virus actually is, how it affects a human body, how it is transmitted, how infection can be prevented, and also explaining how, after infection life can be prolonged through medication, healthy food and a more healthy lifestyle. Additionally, you can get involved in an HIV Support Group to help people affected by the virus.

  • Highlights

The area surrounding St Lucia is packed with exciting things to do; on your weekends off you'll be spoiled for choice. There are a huge amount of different natural systems within the St Lucia area ranging from dune, swamp and coastal forests to rocky and sandy shores, mangroves, woodlands, savanna grassland, thickets, coral reefs and submarine canyons, along with the largest protected wetland in southern Africa. There's great snorkeling at Cape Vidal, Black Rock, and Kosi Bay where, depending on the time of year, you will get the chance to see whales, dolphins, and sea turtles. There are also great game viewing opportunities in the Hluhluwe and Umfolozi National Parks where you'll see all 5 of "the Big 5" if you're lucky!

  • Qualifications

    Requirements: age 17+

You will need to be adaptable to the different tasks involved; teaching children, playing with them, building work, and educating adults are just some of the things you will need to be ready for. An interest and knowledge of HIV and AIDS is helpful but not necessary.
