As a volunteer on the build a future program you will be in the communities, building classrooms and houses for orphaned and vulnerable children, fixing existing households that need to be fixed and painting with the aim of giving a good shelter for these children and a suitable schooling environment. You may also help to start up gardens in the homesteads and develop existing ones.
You will use local techniques of making mud bricks, then lay foundations, complete plastering, flooring, windows, doors and roofing under the supervision and direction of a local builder. Once completed, you will then have the opportunity to help decorate the structure! You will also get to meet local community members and provide support to needy families and children while working on the building.
As a volunteer you may get involved in many of the following activities depending on the timing of your placement:
* Clearing of the area that needs to be built on
* Digging of the foundation
* Making mud bricks
* Building the structure with the help of a professional builder.
* Painting
* Developing trench gardens
* Put up fencing where needed
* Fix up swings and other play equipment
During weekends you will be free to travel and explore as you choose. Various activities available include walking, horse riding, mountain biking, visiting craft markets, taking part in cultural festivities or just relaxing in a sunny climate. Where possible long weekends will be arranged and expeditions to Mozambique, Kruger National Park, St. Lucia and the Natal Drakensberg may be available.
Swaziland has so much variety to offer and all the main activities are based relatively close to the volunteer base. Please remember that should you decide to use accommodation or do activities other than what is provided as part of this itinerary, you will be responsible for covering the costs thereby incurred.
The main skill required is having the motivation to get stuck in and work REALLY hard to improve the living conditions of families in Swaziland. Those with particular building, plumbing, electrical and carpentry skills will be a great asset to the project and you will be able to use your particular skills.
