Within South Africa's education policy promoting equal education to all, the area of computer technology is sadly overlooked, excluding poorer communities from becoming computer literate and further reducing employment opportunities that could allow them to escape from their poverty.
This amazing project, with sponsorship from Microsoft, now has 4 computer labs, with over 150 computers teaching over 1000 children of the Wild Coast from pre-school to high-school age.
In order to continue its amazing work this project needs more volunteers in 2011. We are urgently recruiting volunteers with basic computer skills to join this fantastic project and equip children with the skills they need to succeed in the future.
Activities on this project not only include working in computer labs, volunteers will also become involved with running weekly art clubs and afternoon sports training, as well as get involved with both environmental educational and development in the schools and occasional maintenance work as part of the commitment to aesthetic improvement in schools.
Whether you are based in Cape Town, Port Albert or St Lucia, you are never far away from a stunning beach, a host of adventure or a cultural community of indigenous people. Our volunteer houses provide the opportunity to relax and unwind after a hard day's work and the weekends offer adrenaline sports, the opportunity to spot Africa's magnificent wildlife, the chance to take part in community sports games or just enjoy a typical South African Braii.
While the project requires no formal experience, volunteers will need to have existing a minimum of basic computer skills. Those who have worked with children before or in an educational setting are very welcome. As projects like this have many needs and with children's needs changing each day the adaptability of volunteers to help in different situations is key to the project, as well as the enthusiasm and energy to work in a highly motivated team and high energy children.
