Assistant Language Teachers are assigned to local boards of education or elementary, junior or senior high schools all throughout Japan. They work with Japanese Teachers of English to teach English classes in the public schools. Candidates must be interested in working actively with Japanese students and interested in Japan and the Japanese language.
The JET Program is Japan's most reputable program for English instructors. Sponsored by the Japanese government, the JET Program sends young professionals from 39 countries around the world to work in Japan each year as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) or Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs). Apply this fall to begin work next summer. JET provides roundtrip transportation to Japan, health insurance, training, paid vacations and more.
* Bachelor's degree by July 1 in year of departure
* Not have lived in Japan for 6 or more years in the last 10 years
* Be a citizen of the United States by the application deadline to apply through the Japanese Embassy in Washington, D.C. Citizens of other countries should contact the Embassy of Japan in their own country for more information
* Not have been a former participant of the JET Program in the last 3 years
* Have excellent English language skills
* Not have declined a position with the JET Program in the last program year after receiving notification of placement

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program seeks to help enhance internationalization in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between Japan and other nations. The program aims to improve foreign language education in Japan and to encourage international exchange at the local level through fostering ties between Japanese youth and foreign youth.
