Japan Center for Michigan Universities offers a study abroad program in Japan that allows you to learn the Japanese language while immersing in the native culture. The program gives you the opportunity to develop the language in a local setting, a clear advantage over the foreign language study program offered in your home university.

* 4 levels of Japanese Language
* Placement test to determine level
* 10-credit language course each semester equivalent to an entire academic year's worth of Japanese
* 4 choices in elective courses taught at JCMU or local Japanese universities each semester
* Live in a home stay with a Japanese family or the residence hall
* Participate in field trips, cultural activities and school visits
* Meet other Japanese students through activities with local Japanese universities
* Use skills learned in class daily with JCMU English Language students
* Credit through Michigan State University

The Program Fee of USD 8,200 includes tuition, books, and health insurance. A housing fee of USD 2,080 is also assessed for the semester. For students participating in home stays, this covers at least two meals a day and commuting costs between the home stay site and the Center. For students living in the JCMU apartments, the housing fee covers apartment rent, utilities, maintenance, and cleaning.
Airfare, other transportation costs and miscellaneous expenses are not included in these fees.

Numerous scholarships are available from a broad range of sources for study abroad in Japan. Specifically, students from the JCMU Consortium member institutions (see JCMU website for details) receive automatic scholarships of USD 1,900 per semester.
JCMU's mission consists of a commitment to exchange at the local and state levels, and to academic programs that uphold the highest academic standards while remaining accessible to students from all areas of Michigan, the USA, Japan, and the world. In keeping with its mission, JCMU's academic and Japan-related outreach programs strive to provide students with stimulating intercultural and academic experiences. A goal of JCMU is to make studying in Japan open and affordable to a wide range of students, regardless of their previous background, training, and experience. Hence, students from diverse fields are as welcome to participate as those majoring in Japanese or English language and cultural studies. All participants are encouraged to approach this intercultural adventure with an open mind, personal maturity, and a resourceful attitude.
