    The Environmental Sciences in Japan (ESJ) program is designed for natural science and public policy students who want to add international dimensions to their careers, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The program is co-sponsored by Michigan State University (the Institute of International Health, International Studies and Programs, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the College of Natural Science), the University of Shiga Prefecture, and the member universities of the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU Consortium).

  • Highlights

    The ESJ program includes study of Japanese language and culture, a keystone course entitled 'Environmental Issues in Japan', field trips to environmentally sensitive sites, and internship programs with Japanese laboratories, universities, agencies, and businesses involved in environmental science research and applications. Leading Japanese and American researchers will guest lecture in the keystone course.

  • Qualifications

    Eligible applicants must complete at least 2 semesters of college in the U.S., hold a 2.5 minimum GPA, and discuss their interest in environmental science in their application essay. Students from all fields are encouraged to apply. Students may come from any university. Prior knowledge of Japanese language is not required.
