James Cook University (JCU) is the second oldest university in Queensland and Australia's leading university in the tropics. Offering excellence in teaching and research, JCU is a vibrant, multi-campus university with its main sites in the tropical Queensland cities of Townsville and Cairns, and modern city campuses in Singapore and Brisbane. Courses are also delivered through our education partners in Asia and the Pacific.
Total student enrolments are more than 18,000 and growing, including over 5,000 international students from 100 countries. JCU's activities have a strong focus in regional Queensland but its impact and reach are international, as recognised in the respected Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranking system which has placed JCU in the top 500 universities in the world and in the top 5% of universities worldwide.
JCU's study areas include the arts and humanities, business, the creative arts, education, engineering, health sciences, information technology, law, medicine, social sciences and science. Importantly, JCU works with employers and industry to ensure that courses are relevant and cutting edge and is consistently adapting and updating its programs to meet students' demands.
A Natural Choice for Study
JCU's main sites are located in tropical northern Queensland, a remarkable region where over two million visitors come each year to experience two World Heritage listed natural wonders: the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics region.
Practical Focus
JCU encourages students to gain practical experience while they study, and understands the importance of a qualification that will equip students with the skills that employers value. Many degrees are structured to include practical sessions, field trips, internships and vacation placements, ensuring graduates are job ready.
Supportive Study Environment
With friendly campuses, smaller class sizes, accessible teaching staff and excellent support services including study skills and student mentor programs, our students receive the personal attention they need to achieve their best.
Teaching Excellence
JCU teaching staff are highly qualified and dedicated and many JCU academics are considered to be leaders in their fields. JCU Academics have won 31 national awards for teaching excellence from the Australian Teaching and Learning Council - more than many larger universities.
Research Intensive
As a leading research university, JCU provides excellent facilities for teaching and learning. JCU receives more than 27 million dollars in research funding each year and is a member of the national alliance, Innovative Research Universities and has as its vision to be one of the world's leading research universities in the tropics.
