The first part of the Master consists of an intensive course of 400 hours of theoretical lectures and laboratories over a 4/5 months period; the theoretical course is followed by a 3/6 months training internship within external institutions and industries. The internships have the crucial purpose of focusing the student's experience to a specific professional activity. The overall course has the duration of one year.
* The Lectures. The theoretical course is organized in 4 modules:
1. Fundamental Nuclear Theory
- radiation physics, radiation chemistry, nuclear chemistry, radiation detection and dosimetry, radiobiology,
2. Industrial Applications of Ionising Radiation
- material science, industrial sterilization, food irradiation, application to the agriculture and environment.
3. Radiochemistry and Radioisotopes Techniques
- cyclotrones, radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals innuclear medicine, PET centres, monitoring of radioactivity and radionuclides in the environment, application of nuclear analytical techniques to the material science, art manufacts and environment, organization of the safety networks.
4. Radioprotection: Program for Qualified Experts
- Program for 'Qualified Expert'; introduction to Nuclear Decommissioning.
* The Stage. The training stage has the crucial aim to focus the professional skill toward the chosen specialty. It consists of an internship to be spent within external institutions and companies which are partners of the School. The duration of the internship is six months starting from April-May.
The intensive theoretical course coupled with the training stages spent at external institutions and industries will enable the graduates of the Master to become experts in some of the major non-power nuclear activities listed in the programme.
The activities of the first part of the Master will be held at the Collegio Ghislieri, a historical institution of the XVI century.
