This unique course is a partnership between IED Florence and Palazzo Spinelli Institute for Art and Restoration in which students will combine and intensive study of Florentine art history and the fundamentals of painting restoration theory and practice with hands-on time in the laboratory. Students are introduced to the key concepts and techniques of restoration of the painted image, focusing on oil canvas paintings and fresco. Art history lectures and site visits to museums and observation at professional restoration studios will prepare students to work with simulation panels.
Program partners: Istituto per arte e restauro Palazzo Spinelli and the Accademia di Belle Arti Como.
Admission requirements: Introductory courses are intended for students at all levels of experience, including absolute beginners. No specific skills are required. Applicants should also show curiosity, passion and motivation.
Topics covered: Art History and iconography, restoration materials, physical and chemical considerations for traditional canvas paintings and frescos, preventive conservation, restoration protocol, basics of restoration analysis and cultural heritage preservation.

The Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) is a design school that attracts students from over 90 different countries to its one and three year/four undergraduate, masters courses and advanced training.
