  • Description

The Isabela Oceanographic Institute (IOI) is a Florida-based non-profit organization which operates on Isabela Island in the Galapagos. Isabela is the largest island physically, but has one of the smallest populations with around 2500 permanent residents. Here, the organization strives to merge higher education with community development through locally driven social and environmental projects. Among these, IOI is committed to providing professional English teaching services to the local education system.

Each school year, IOI places volunteer English teachers in the 2 elementary and middle schools with about 330 students total in nine grade levels and the local high school grades K9 K12 with about 250 students.

The "volunteers" will work as full teachers. The teachers will commit to teaching English as a foreign language at a basic level and other teacher duties such as parent conferences, grading, etc. Each teacher is responsible for providing English language education to various grades up to around 20 classes per week (each class lasting about 45 min).

Teachers are encouraged and expected to compliment the basic curriculum with their own lesson planning and activity development. Furthermore, it is beneficial for the teachers to collaborate with one another as well as with the school in order to ensure the success and sustainability of this program.
