Durban is South Africa's third largest city and home to the largest Indian population outside Asia. As one of the main tourist destinations in Southern Africa, Durban offers an intriguing blend of Eastern, Western and African cultures. Within a stone's throw of office blocks, theaters, shopping malls, and cafes is the Indian Ocean and Durban's Golden Mile with its soft, sandy, swimming beaches, great surfing, and warm weather all year round. Durban also has an active nightlife where you can enjoy hip hop and house sounds at clubs like Tilt and 330 or restaurants like Joe Cool's with weekend DJs and big screen TV's for rugby and soccer enthusiasts. Get a taste of Durban's diverse cultural offerings at the Spice Market or the BAT Centre where you'll find local arts, crafts, and entertainment that reflects the Zulu, Indian and Western heritage of KwaZulu-Natal.
Each of the five campuses of the University of KwaZulu-Natal has its own personality reflecting the kaleidoscopic community that shapes it. Since the end of apartheid the university has steadily increased its proportion of non-White students, including Black South African, Indian and Colored students, who now make up more than seventy percent of the student population. The Howard College campus in Durban is situated in an environmental conservancy with lush gardens full of indigenous flora and fauna. The campus is set above the city, affords spectacular views of the bay, port and downtown, and is a ten-minute drive from the coast.
The Howard College campus offers courses primarily in the following faculties: Engineering; Humanities; and Development & Social Sciences. Some coursework is available in Management Studies and Science & Agriculture. The Howard College campus also hosts the annual Durban International Film Festival, and with its music department, contributes to KwaZulu-Natals reputation as the jazz and ethno-music center of South Africa.
There are a large number of clubs and societies operating on both the Howard College and the Pietermaritzburg campuses. The clubs cater to a wide range of interests such as hiking, films, photography, music, wildlife, etc. Howard College has an impressive range of indoor and outdoor facilities and has its own tennis and squash courts, swimming pool, jogging track and gymnasium. A wide array of sports are offered and include: aerobics, badminton, basketball, ballroom dancing, canoeing, chess, cricket, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, karate, mountaineering, netball, rowing, rugby, soccer, softball, squash, surfing, swimming, tennis, underwater sports, volleyball, water polo and yachting. Compared to a lot of my friends I definitely had to put with less hassle - all because of you. In so many aspects you could not have done any better. I would be more than willing to talk to others ...
