The beautiful, modern main campus of the University of Fort Hare is situated in Alice, on the historic site of Fort Hare, which played a crucial role in the advancement of the Eastern Cape in the mid-19th Century. Alice is a small rural town about two miles from the campus across the Tyhume River and 70 miles from East London, the closest city and airport. East London is at the northern end of the 300-kilometer stretch of Sunshine Coast, renowned for it's beautiful unpolluted and un-crowded beaches. There are many nature reserves as well as other eco-tourist attractions in the vicinity of Alice. Situated in the nearby Amatola Mountains, Hogsback is a magical hiking spot. The landscape is lush, green and dotted with beautiful waterfalls. The Afromontane forest hosts the Samango Blue Monkey and the critically endangered Cape Parrot. If you are seeking a small-town rural environment, with most activities on campus, Alice provides the ideal setting.
The University of Fort Hare is the oldest historically black university in Southern Africa and has been a major training ground for intellectuals throughout Africa. Recognized as one of the most prestigious universities on the continent, Fort Hare alumni include Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Mangosutho Buthelezi, Govan Mbeki, Robert Sobukhwe, and Dr. Ivy Matseppe-Cassiburi among others. The university boasts a long-standing tradition of non-racism that is characterized by intellectually enriching and critical debate. The University of Fort Hare houses the largest Liberation Archive in South Africa, and arguably the world. It includes the archives of all the major South African liberation movements: ANC, PAC, AZAPO, Unity Movement, Non Racial Sports Movement, and personal collections of Costa Gazi, Joe Ebrahim , AC Jordan, and Livingstone Mqotsi.
The University of Fort Hare has five academic faculties: Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management and Commerce, Science and Agriculture, and the Nelson Mandela School of Law. As an Interstudy student you are welcome to take courses from any of the faculties subject to scheduling.
The UFH student center includes a café overlooking a lovely swimming pool where you can unwind after class and can enjoy the view of the Amatola mountains. There are 23 clubs for you to join at UFH. The large well-equipped indoor sports center offers squash, badminton, basketball, darts, karate, basketball, chess, table-tennis, boxing, judo, snooker, jazz, gymnastics, weightlifting/body-building, squash, boxing and ballroom dancing. There are facilities for outdoor sports such as cricket, floodlit soccer/rugby fields, tennis, netball, ring tennis, track, softball, golf, and swimming. Fort Hare is a primarily residential campus. This has many advantages as it creates a close knit student body where people of different ages, interests and backgrounds meet and learn to live together. You will live with UFH students in a single room on-campus. Cafeterias are available in several of the residences.

Compared to a lot of my friends I definitely had to put with less hassle - all because of you. In so many aspects you could not have done any better. I would be more than willing to talk to others ...
