  • Description

As a pioneering provider of semester and yearlong study abroad opportunities in Southern Africa, Interstudy offers students the widest selection of facilitated direct enrollment options in the region. Students can enroll in a broad range of courses and actively participate in university life while still enjoying Interstudy organized excursions and staying connected to in country staff.

The Rhodes campus, long considered one of the most beautiful in the country, is located in the Festival City of Grahamstown where small town friendliness is a feature of life. The University's landscaped grounds and flower-filled gardens invite you to study outdoors where tutorials are often held under the hundred-year-old trees. The year-round moderate climate will also get you outdoors for jogging, walking and cycling as well as for a large variety of sports, art classes and recreational activities. Situated in the Eastern Cape, Grahamstown is about 80 miles from the coastal city of Port Elizabeth and is considered the arts capital of the province. For ten days in late June to early July the National Arts Festival takes place downtown in the 1820 Monument area. With its vibrant fringe theater and the influx of hundreds of thousands of visitors, the character of the city changes from a small university town to a bustling mecca for music, dance, drama, and the visual arts.

  • Highlights

Rhodes University is an internationally respected educational center of excellence, modeled after the British tutorial system at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Rhodes provides students with a close-knit community feel both in and out of the classroom. The university offers a small campus, with small class sizes, and top-notch academics. Rhodes owes its unique character among South African universities to a combination of factors, some historical, some geographical, some cultural, and some architectural. As a visiting student at Rhodes, you will have the opportunity to participate in the Student Volunteer Program which matches students with one of the local community-based organizations that run projects in the under resourced parts of Grahamstown.

Rhodes University comprises the following academic faculties: Commerce, Education, Humanities, Law, Pharmacy, and Science. As a visiting student you may take courses within most faculties and departments at Rhodes including: African and foreign languages, art history, classics, communications, computer science, economics, English, environmental studies, fine art, geography, geology, history, ichthyology and fisheries science, mathematics, music, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology among others.

You will live in a single room with other Rhodes students in one of the nine halls of residence, each with its own unique character. Each hall has between three and six houses, grouped around a central dining hall. In your residence common room, you may find students playing a game of pool, lounging in comfortable armchairs, listening to the campus radio station, tuning in to their favorite television shows, or just talking over coffee.

There is a wide diversity of societies on campus ranging from the Ballroom Dancing Society to the Group for Environmental Action at Rhodes. Sport and recreation play a very important role in student life. The Sports Council offers a wide range of activities from aikido to water polo. More than thirty sports are played at social, inter-house, inter-hall, league, provincial or national level, with over eighty-five percent of students taking part.
