Port Elizabeth, otherwise known as the friendly city or simply PE, is South Africa's fifth largest city. Life in PE generally revolves around the beach, where ocean sports rule: swimming, snorkeling, surfing, bodysurfing, windsurfing, jet skiing, fishing, boating, and scuba diving are all readily available. PEs Humewood Beach has achieved international Blue Flag status and the city is a nature lovers paradise, with beautiful parks, gardens, and a number of wildlife reserves in the area. Port Elizabeth is truly blessed: miles of golden beaches, temperate climate, extensive sports facilities, and great evening entertainment, from sundowner cruises to theatre performances, nightclubs and late-night music spots. The Boardwalk casino and entertainment complex in Summerstrand offers shopping, dining, entertainment, and gaming, 24/7, all under one roof. With mountains, forests and oceans all within easy reach, you'll find that Port Elizabeth is a great springboard for travel to other parts of the Eastern Cape.

  • Highlights

The main campus of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University enjoys a unique location in the Summerstrand section of PE, four miles from the city center, in a nature reserve surrounded by the sea and coastal dunes. NMMU is an engaged and people-centered university that serves the needs of its diverse communities by contributing to sustainable development through excellent academic courses, research and service delivery. NMMU is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse universities in southern Africa with students studying in seven faculties across the university.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is one of the most flexible of Interstudy's university partners in terms of course selection. As a visiting student, you can select from a wide range of courses within any of the university's seven faculties: Arts, Education, Health Sciences, Science, Law, Business and Economic Sciences, or Engineering, the Built Environment and Information Technology. As scheduling allows, you may even combine courses offered in different departments and faculties. One of the highlights of the NMMU offerings is the 2-credit Community Service Learning course.

Reasonably priced meals and beverages are available at the student cafeterias and tuck shops. The Madibaz Coffee Shop, located downstairs from the International Center, is a great place to meet friends, old and new. There are numerous student societies covering a range of academic, religious, social, and recreational interests from Hip Hop to Ballroom Dancing, Debating to Film, and Jazz to Wine Culture. Modern sports facilities include athletic fields, courts, swimming pools, a synthetic track, and a large indoor sports center. The sports offered vary from archery to water polo; or you can head to the beach for surfing, windsurfing, diving, and beach-volleyball. You will have a single room with shared bathroom and kitchenette in NMMU's international student complex, Annie's Cove, where you'll meet students from all over the world. The gated complex has a pool and is within walking distance to the campus, grocery stores, and restaurants.
