Awesome Team in Bogota!

I had an awesome experience while volunteering in Bogota at IVHQ. The volunteer house was comfortable, modern and the food was amazing! Rosa cooks breakfast, lunch and dinner daily and all the volunteers help to set and clean the table. Marta and Will (program co-ordinators) were easy to talk to, accomodating to volunteer requests and helpful with directing us how to best experience all that Bogota had to offer. Volunteering with the homeless consisted of 8am-1pm blocks daily (except Sunday) where we would help prepare food, setup chairs, give food, and help cleanup after them. It is very similar to a soup kitchen setup. The highlight of the trip was doing the overnight 'meet the homeless' where many middle-class Columbians take time from their schedules to provide food, and talk to the homeless. This occurs every other Saturday night from 8pm-2am. The stories you hear about from just talking to the homeless are really sad. Really hits home how one decision or instance can totally change the living conditions of a person. We gave them food, mainly talked and even sang with them. They were so appreciative and although we all went thinking we were giving back to them, they gave us more than we gave them. The staff was also accomodating to allow me to experience teaching kids at a local school and visiting an orphanage. You really need to go with an open mind and attempt to make the most of your experience to get anything of value out of it. I highly recommend you consider this option not only for the volunteer experience, but also learn more about Bogota and Columbia.
