Cusco is perfect if you are interested in anthropology and archeology as you are surrounded by ancient Incan civilization and European Spanish culture at every turn. While living with a Peruvian family and studying Spanish, Biodiversity of Peru, History of the Incas, Incan architecture, etc. you will serve 12-15 hours per week in a local agency or program that is focused on the needs of indigenous populations and immigrant populations. Areas of service include education, technology, healthcare, entrepreneurship, endangered animals and the environment. As you work with local people and care for those in need, you will find your experience and understanding of the culture enriched and deepened, and your leadership skills developed.
Cusco is one of the most important cultural and tourist destinations in the world and is the capital of the Inca Empire. Situated at the base of the Andes, it is the entryway to Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The city of Cusco was declared a Cultural Heritage of Humanity site by UNESCO in 1983 and boasts charming cobblestone streets, stone buildings made by the Incas and exciting nightlife and cafes. In short it is a perfect blend of the old and the new. Excursions may include a city tour, the Sacred Valley of the Incas and Machu Picchu. Students arrive in Lima and spend several days visiting this important Latin American capital" the "City of Kings".

IPSL welcomes applicants from all nations and backgrounds. Minimum age is 18 and gap year, college students and graduates are encouraged to apply. There are no special qualifications to volunteer. Minimum GPA is 2.5.

Fees include: instruction; administrative fees; orientation; service placement and supervision; health insurance; accommodation, and meals. Personal expenses not covered by fees include: airfare; books; local transportation; and spending money. All inclusive program fee except for airfare and personal spending money.

IPSL participants are typically undergraduate students who want to study and volunteer abroad. They generally take 3-6 academic classes (9-18 credits) per semester and do community service 12-15 hours per week. Participants want an integrated experience where learning and service work together.

IPSL has two related missions: 1) offering programs uniting academic study and volunteer service to the community in international/intercultural settings that are models for the practice of service-learning, and 2) promoting the theory and practice of service-learning through research, publications, conferences, and training. IPSL endeavors to engage students, educators, and community members in the union of service and learning so that all may become more civically engaged, interculturally literate, internationally aware, and responsive to the needs of others.
