For most of the time humans have existed on earth, knowledge was passed from elders to the young through stories and demonstrations. With the move into the "modern" world with its focus on scientific knowledge, the traditional knowledge that passed from parents to children was relegated to the level of being quaint. The focus on sustainability has led to a renewed interest in the traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples. This course explores the rich knowledge of the Maya cultures of Belize, particularly in the areas of agriculture, medicinal plants and cosmology.
Course participants will have the opportunity to spend time in a Maya village and work with elders, farmers, community leaders and teachers to explore how knowledge is transmitted to the young. Activities will include visiting Tumul K'in: Centre of Learning, a Maya high school; following farmers (corn and cacao) into their fields, working with women in food preparation and conservation, visiting medicinal gardens and talking to midwives and traditional healers.
