  • Description

Bones and Stones, The Peoples and Archaeology of Belize will examine the pre-history and history of the peoples who have inhabited the country of Belize. The earliest inhabitants and their remains will be explored through visits to ruins, pottery and bone evidence. The rich archaeological evidence of the Maya who settled Belize from about 900 b.c. provides many opportunities to begin to understand a culture and people who shaped the area that became Belize. Visits to sites such as Caracol, Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and Pook's Hill will showcase the art and architecture of the Maya peoples. Course participants will also have a chance to participate in an archaeological excavation.

Students will visit ruins, the Belize Archives and Museum, modern Maya communities and talk with archaeologists and local historians.
