Inner City School: Teacher's Aid

New Zealand
Share |

Location
New Zealand: Wellington

Term
Throughout the year

  • Description

This vibrant inner city school, host to an exciting mix of nationalities, offers classroom-based experiences where interns act as teacher aids. Many new migrants to New Zealand make their homes in the surrounding suburbs - some from war-torn places like Somalia and the former Yugoslav Republic. The classroom is a very strange place in a foreign land to these and other children from far-off places - thrown together with their Kiwi counterparts. Clyde Quay School teachers value assistance from interns in their often frenetic classroom environments. As a teachers aid, the intern will gain a firsthand knowledge of the New Zealand primary education system and observe the differences in the education system, to that of their own. The teaching of the Maori language and customs and other unique components of the local grade school education, will make this a valuable experience in acquiring a deeper understanding of the New Zealand culture, whilst contributing to an education environment always appreciative of a 'helping hand'.
