The National Parks Service has a history that dates back to the establishment of one of the world's first National Parks, Sydney's Royal National Park, and gazette in the 1870s. The Australia National Park Service is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of millions of hectares of land - approx. size of California.
Interns will assist Rangers in their research work, eradication of feral animals - especially the fox and domestic cat which prey on small native marsupials, public education programs, and the very popular Discovery Ranger Program. The Discovery Ranger Program employs Rangers on a short-term contract to teach park visitors about the local fauna, flora and sites of cultural significance. The Ranger may be a university student, local Aboriginal person, or anyone with an interest in conservation and knowledge of the area. Discovery Rangers interact with the public daily and are an important tool within the National Parks management strategy.
Job Description:
Interns will work alongside Park Rangers, assisting them with their daily tasks and various long term projects. A prioritized project includes the feral animal eradication program. Feral animals like goats and foxes threaten both the region's native flora and fauna. Interns will also assist with trapping and tagging native animals, so that their behaviors and movement can be observed. In addition to these projects, regular tasks may include routine trail maintenance and caring for sick animals. Interns will also get a chance to become park guides.
Positions with the National Parks are competitive. Australia's National Parks are a vital ecological barrier against the tide of materialism hungry for resources. They also provide places that people can remove themselves from urban sprawl and the pressures within.

The Institute for Cultural Ecology was founded on the conviction that visits to exotic destinations imply a commitment to cultural sensitivity and environmental stewardship. Our programs match the interests, academic goals, and passions of the participant to premier host organizations and researchers.
