Project:
As globalization becomes an increasingly pervasive force, indigenous communities the world over face challenges in preserving and forwarding their cultural and linguistic heritages.
The Aboriginal Radio and Language Center stems globalization's tide by providing a media outlet dedicated to Aboriginal music, current affairs and the Indigenous viewpoint. The Language Center teaches and records in the traditional language of the Bourke region. The centers educational program schools children and adults in this language. As a result, Indigenous people are keeping their culture alive and getting their message out to the wider community.
The Aboriginal Radio and Language Center acts also as a meeting place and a forum for ideas, providing the intern with the opportunity gain firsthand knowledge about Australia's indigenous peoples' policy and the challenges of post-colonial power issues.
Location:
Bourke
Interns will live in Bourke during this internship and will have the opportunity to get to know some of the local residents on a first name basis.
The outback town of Bourke was once known as "Fort Bourke." As western settlers pushed over the Darling River into the frontier, Fort Bourke played a central role in efforts to colonize both the land and the indigenous peoples. Anything west of here is considered the Outback, which is why Bourke is often referred to as, "The Gateway to the Rural Outback."
The town has a large population of Aboriginal people. Bourke is a microcosm of what effects contact with the industrialized occidentals of Western Europe has on the world's indigenous populations. The memories of massacres remain fresh here, as do the current experiences of institutionalized racism. Australian Aboriginal people were only counted as citizens in 1967. Up until the early 1970's, Government agencies continued to take children away from their parents. In Bourke, one witnesses the history of conquest. Scratching the surface reveals a society that existed prior to invasion, and allows one to enjoy the triumphs of a people who have faced nothing but oppression.
