sri lanka hospital with inspire volunteering (july 08)

My 2 weeks spent volunteering in a hospital in rural Kosgoda, Sri lanka have been interesting to say the least. Even as a seasoned global volunteer, the first few days were not exactly easy. Singhalese people can be very direct and short which is not difficult to misinterpret as rudeness. However, by the end of the first week I had come to realize just how friendly these people truly are. Singhalese hospitality is perhaps only second to the Hindus in Northern India. My home stay was comfortable, convenient, and most importantly, provided the most delectable authentic meals. Kassapa, the local manager, was extremely helpful and generous with his time, taking me to see temples whenever he could. As a pre-medical student, the hospital placement was an ideal learning environment for me. Because I am not qualified to give an medical care, I found little to do but was compensated by the doctor's complete devotion to explaining, case by case, the treatment for each patient. I have learned a great deal about Singhalese culture and healthcare and am overall very pleased with my trip. Cheers, -David Flick
