Witness first-hand how globalization affects the city and how China's increasing influence affects the world. In this economic and cultural hub of more than 18 million people, you will have the rare opportunity to learn and communicate in Mandarin, while being exposed to the local Shanghai dialect - a mark of the unique languages and cultures that exist in different regions throughout the country. As China's financial powerhouse, Shanghai provides an environment for learning not only about China, but also about Asia and the world at large!
The IES Abroad Shanghai Language Intensive Program is designed for students dedicated to learning Chinese. With zero language proficiency, you now have the opportunity to rapidly expand your knowledge of written and spoken Chinese. The program features a very strong language component, a for-credit internship option, and the opportunity to take liberal arts courses with our local partner university; Shanghai International Studies University (SISU).
The Shanghai Language lntensive Program requires you to enroll in a 10-credit language course, as a Chinese language learner with zero proficiency. It is designed to maximize language study, with no more than 10 students in each class. Formal Chinese classes meet four hours per day, four days per week. In addition to the 16 hours of classroom instruction per week, IES Abroad also provides four hours weekly of private tutorials with Chinese language tutors. This program also enable students to apply their newly acquired language skills at an internship with local businesses or organizations.
Because the program is organized in partnership with the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), IES Abroad students are also afforded the opportunity to take liberal arts courses in English at SISU.
