Goodbye Forest of Dean… HELLO INDIA!

It's crazy to think only a year ago today i would of been with Colin (my camel) in India, on a 3 hour trek with my amazing new group of friends from all different parts of the world who i would be spending 4 weeks with, currently in Pushkar, on our way to camp in the desert for the night!! That was one of many amazing unforgettable days and experiences of my time in India. The India Experience Program gives you a taster of real India by immersing you in the culture and Indian way of life right from the start, literally!!….from the moment you step off the plane! oh and the sound of a zillion car beeps!

The volunteering was very interesting, having volunteered before in Ukraine and Borneo before hand, i prepared myself for an emotional experience and that was what it was indeed. I was already the mother hen of my group looking out for everyone and I felt like mothering all these beautiful children i still feel very fortunate to have met. The Elephant Village in particular was a favourite of mine, the children greeted us with open arms and smiling faces. We helped to improve their english alphabet and numbers, we played games and celebrated Holi Festival with them, it was just amazing and i will defiantly be visiting the village again in the future once i've saved some more pennies!

Food, transport, guidance, bedrooms, you know how it is…. don't expect 5* quality, very basic but clean, although Idex's main teaching base accommodation was verrrry homely and my favourite by far! Felt very safe and secure with all our drivers over the 4 weeks, never a boring journey thats for sure! So thankful to all the staff members of Idex who i came in contact with, always willing to help!

At the end of the day i can honestly say i had an unforgettable experience, moments of good and bad. Prepare to be out of your comfort zone and just immerse yourself in everything that India has to offer, stay positive, keep smiling and laugh when things go wrong!

THANK YOU IDEX! <3

Amazing Time in Beautiful India

This has been one of the best experiences yet. Everyone we have met along the way, in the houses, our guides and drivers have all been very friendly, welcoming and kind. Each tour we have been on has been perfect from start to finish, my favorite being the trip to Pushkar with our camel ride and trip to the desert. Our accommodation at each stop has been clean, tidy and well presented and the food has been lovely. Our project at the school wasn't what we expected as the itinerary we received said we would be working with the children but instead we were painting a room, although hard work this was still good and it feels good to help the community. The dance workshop wasn't as fun as expected as the teacher, nice but she seemed to struggle with teaching. Also the Saree workshop we were told Pryia (our guide) would be taking this class and the henna class which we were looking forward to as we have got to know her well and we have a laugh together but another lady took these workshops and kept having to ask Pryia for help, she couldn't speak very good English which makes it harder instead of easier. The thing that has made this trip so amazing has to be Pryia, she has looked after us from the minute we got out of the airport until the end, she is there for us day and night and is always kind, fun and smiling. We always feel safe when Pryia is around and she always has us laughing, she teaches us about the Indian culture and explains everything so we understand what is happening, she will be missed in Goa. Thank you Idex for the past few weeks but an extra special thank you to Pryia, we will miss you!! xxxx

Indescribable experiences in the fascinating world of India

From mountains over desert to the sea.. India is such a diverse and amazing country. Through Idex we were able to experience this huge country in many different ways. We were riding camels and elephants, walked among the poor and the rich, taught children how to spell the alphabet and made many new friends, natives as well as other travelers. We hiked up the Himalayas and went spontaneously for paragliding to see the world from 1000 meters above. We experienced the stressful and fast way of living in the big cities as well as the calm atmosphere in the very north. We visited so many temples and yet, every one was different, such as for example the famous Dalai-Lama-temple or the impressive akshardham-temple - for myself, the most beautiful building I have ever seen! So many new impressions which can not be described by any author or movie. You just have to go and see it yourself, these weeks were incomparable to anything I have witnessed before. During all this time we were so lucky to have our lovely guide with us - Rinku. One of the most caring and cutest persons I have ever met. Whenever there was a problem, no matter what, she was able to solve it successfully. Rinku was always there for us, as friend as well as a caretaker and we are all so thankful to had her with us. She was an enrichment to our journey and we are sad to leave her. Rinku, we wish you all the best for your future and hope we will meet again one day!
Thank you for everything.
Love, Sherin

Awesome India

This travel was the most beautiful think i ever did in my life. Thanks to everyone for the welcome, specially Ringo, Appy and Suran who drives us around your beautifull country in serenity safety and happiness. Thanks you I will miss you so much. And I was also so happy to meet the kids at the elephant village but so sad cause lot of them could go to the university in stead of working with the elephant cause they were so smart and happy if i could i would bring all of them in Switzerland but maybe that they are more happy with that life than with a western life. I will miss you so much thanks you. Bye bye Ringo..

india experience

I had a brilliant time in India through Idex. It does exactly what it says on the tin - gives you a taster of real India by immersing you in the culture and Indian way of life right from the start. I was in a group of 11 and I have made some friends for life. It was well organised and our amazing tour guide Rinku was always on hand to help and make our trip more enjoyable. The accommodation is nice but basic, sharing with three others with bunk beds and sometimes the showers didnt work. The only other issue was it would have been nice to spend more time at some places however each day there is a busy schedule to stick to in order to make the most of everyday. Would highly recommend this trip to friends looking to experience India for first time.

Not just a vacation

I enjoyed the variety of cultural aspects we experienced. Our group did not only do some sightseeing. I felt like I was living in an Indian family, because we could ask the housekeeper and group leader everything we want to know about their culture. There are many examples of little experiences not written in the program we did, because we were interested in a special part of the culture. I wanted to learn how to make chai and asked Rinku to buy a sari with me. It was no problem to have a little chai lesson in the kitchen of an idex house and go shopping together.
The volunteering was very interesting. I liked to see what school is like in India and I think you have nowhere the possibility to get to know the culture better than working with local and for local people. The only thing I can complain about is the accent of some of the guides at some of the sights especially the one in Udaipur and at the ford in Jaipur. I think it would be better to have an audio guide than a guide you can not understand. But the whole idex team is well understandable, always friendly and helpful. It is a really well organized trip and I feel save with this group and enjoy every moment.

The best adventure of my life!

I travelled from Colombia to Delhi. Me and my friends had all the info and support we needed from IDEX in order to have our visas approved, we also had their support 24/7 while we where staying in that amazing country. We were picked at the airport as they said, drove us to IDEX camp and had an amazing welcome party, they made us feel at home.
The experience in general was amazing, always on time and we were surrounded by the most kind and amazing people.
Food, transport, guidance, bedrooms, everything was great and clean.
We also had a lot of fun discovering a new culture and made a lot of new friends from all over the world.
I´m planning to go again with IDEX, to continue discovering more about India and see my Indian friends again!

Indian Experience

I really enjoyed this trip as we were able to see a lot of India within 4 weeks. there was some great new experiences thrown in too like taking the night train and visiting the elephant village and school. There was many opportunities to try local food and learn about the local culture in dance classes, henna classes and sari classes. The trip also ends nicely at Goa giving us the chance to relax and enjoy some beautiful beaches. Are guide throughout the first 20 days was great she had great enthusiasm throughout and was very helpful if there were any issues. Her henna skills were also great. Overall this was a great trip and i would recommend to a first time traveler as there is support throughout the trip.

27 days pure adventure

The India Experience Program by Idex was the best decision I`ve ever made!! Where ever you are.. Delhi...Jaipur...Palampur, I always felt at home immediately. Idex is like a big family who always care about you. I would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to see the real India and not just the touristic sides of India. On every day you think that it can`t any get better but then it does. Especially our competent tour guide Rinku who always found a solution for our problems and helped us at every step of the way, making our adventure fun.

My India Experience

I had an incredible India Experience. This adventure is perfect if you are looking for the real deal. You stay with Indian families and are able to experience the real every day life and food. Once on the programme i saw little to no tourists other than our group- which is exactly the type of experience i wanted. I was able to experience things i would not otherwise do such as trekking in the Himalayas and riding a camel towards the sunset. I would definitely recommend this experience if you are looking for something jam packed full but also with the opportunity to do your own thing.

Adventures - Yes ! Experience - Yes ! People - a very big YES !

The Palampur IDEX camp is situated in a superb location. The accommodation is fine, with good nutritious meals. Sapna and staff met us with happy smiling faces - not forgetting the welcoming fire outside the front door on arrival. The staff have been very friendly and accommodated all requests in a friendly and courteous manner - including loads of requests for chai, even outwith meal times. I also love Sapna's office - can one please be put into my own home : light, airy and with the most fantastic views !

The whole of the IDEX 'Adventure and Experience' programme has been interesting and enjoyable - sorry that it will end all too soon. All IDEX staff encountered throughout this tour/journey have been very good, including kind and considerate.

Special mention should be made of Rinku who has looked after/cared for the group throughout our journey to date. She has coped well, even through sometimes trying situations - when 'the team'/group have altered plans already made (eg/ meal locations and tour itineraries). The group have enjoyed and appreciated work done on their behalf, and today have appreciatively 'pooled together' to include her in their optional activity of para gliding.

Indian experience

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in India. I feel the programme is very well organised and the staff have been very helpful. Rinku is always happy and aproachable, I feel that she would be able to help me in any situation. There has been a good mixture of activities during our programme which have been enjoyable and I have learned alot about the culture. The accomodation and food has been a good standard throughout my time in India. Overall I would recommend this trip to my friends and I cannot wait to tell them about my experience when I arrive home.

Experience India

I have spent now 3 of my 4 weeks in India and I enjoyed my time very much. The program is well organized, you always have someone you can talk to and ask questions. I felt safe all the time. the food was great, especially in Jaipur! And of course, Priya accompanying us all the way, was supporting us, fighting for our seats on the trains :-) and always making sure we were feeling good. Thank you Priya!!
Overall a very good program and experience!

Indian Experience

This has been a truly great adventure. It started of in Delhi's bustling city life, with siteseeing and shopping possibilities, a good but hectic start of the Indian adventure. Afterwards we went to Agra by car, where we saw the great Taj Mahal and had a great guide! Throughout the journey we've experienced volunteer work in Jaipur, with incredibly quite and eager kids from the elephant village, we've been in Himachal Pradesh, seen the stunning nature, had yoga with view of the snowy mountain tops, and actually visited the mountains: on our trekking to the Triund top from McLeodGanj. The trip offers experiences in different climates, the incredibly hot Jaipur and Pushkar, the moderate Palampur, and the freezing Himalaya mountains. We've mostly traveled by car, but also had the experience of a genuine Indian train ride with the night train to and from Himachal Pradesh. From our first and last day in Delhi, going along with us to Jaipur, agra, Pushkar and Himalaya, Priya our lovely guide has been with us, providing answers and help in every situation. The journey is very well planned, except for a few things (see section below), and we've gotten to visit beautiful temples, forts, museums (except one ridiculous one), and also gotten to have enough time to enjoy free time to explore on our own terms.

My overall experience has been amazing, but there are a couple of things I would've liked to know in advance/would've like to be a bit better planned.
1.) As a celiac, a person with strong gluten intolerance, I was promised that there would be absolutely no problems. And all though this is true for most of the places (the cooks in Jaipur where especially amazing), this was not the reality. Either Priya, or the locals cooks would forget when preparing packed lunches and dinners, which would result in rushed and unprepared meals before train journeys and trekking. So keep in mind that this is not a common issue in India, so if you have an allergy, be sure to mention it too often rather than too seldom, that will resolve the problem.
2. Because they book the different train journeys and your flight (from Delhi to Goa) the moment you sign up for the program you will be put in different seats spread all across the train, and on all different flights. Priya talked to people on the train and managed to find us all seats together, both of the times, but this would take many uneasy hours of restless activities on the train before the people with our wanted seats would get on. I would rather like for the company to wait with the ticket purchases so that we could all try and book seats together. This of course is only a minor flaw, and to be expected whilst travelling here in India.
3. I did a month in India before I started this trip, and at least in the beginning, they would take us to very expensive restaurants and lunch places compared to where I had dined the last month (which were not at all bad or dirty restaurants)- if you're concerned about your budget, just let them now and they will take you to cheaper (still clean and good) places. No one has gotten ill yet:) Also, this program is designed to be an introduction to India, low impact volunteering and many touristy places. If you have been in India beforehand, I would recommend doing another trip than this one, but would still look at Idex' journeys.

India Experience

Having always wanted to travel to India and experience the culture, the trip did not disappoint. From day one you are immersed in a whole new culture and everyday experiencing new things.
For me, a personal highlight was the trek up the Himalayas. It was definitely hard work but it was so worth it seeing the beautiful views at the end of the snowy mountain tops and beautiful starry night sitting by the fire.
I would definitely recommend this trip and can honestly say it's been one of the best things I've ever done. My only complaint is that some of the trips out and sightseeing activities lacked information and time to really appreciate what it was I was seeing.

good

Experience with our guide was fine. She let us do what we wanted but was always nearby to help if we needed to communicate with any locals or if we had an issue. She took care of everything so our trip was stress free. Food was always provided and decent accommodation.
