Amazing monk teaching in Sri Lanka

My name is August and I have been teaching English to Buddhist monks for 3 weeks and will do so for another week here in Sri Lanka. So far it has been an amazing experience and the monks are some of the most open and friendly individuals I have ever encountered. Not only have I been able to share my knowledge of the English language with these nice people but in return they have taught me so much about their religion and culture which has truly contributed to an eye opening experience. They are truly eager to learn and as eager to teach. Although the actual volunteer work has been really fun and interesting, it is only a fraction of the full experience. In the house we live with other volunteers from different countries and cultures who have all been really friendly and social. Not only did we spend a lot of time together in the house but we also got to go on several exciting excursions to experience even more of beautiful Sri Lanka. Volunteering here has been everything I thought it would be and so much more.

Amazing volunteer program in Sri Lanka

Hey i'm Charlotte from Denmark, i have been staying in Sri Lanka for 3 weeks and i'm staying for one more week (four weeks in total). I'm travelling with my friend Emma who is also from Denmark.
We are staying in a house with other volunteers from all over the world, which is really nice. We all work at different projects so we are not together 24/7. Emma and I are working at a Boys College where they have from grade 1 to 5. We are teaching English and it can sometimes be hard to communicate with boys who are that young because we can not speak their language. Even though we sometimes have a hard time to communicate is it a really nice experience to try doing volunteering work. At the school is there no one who can speak English that well so it is also a bit hard to communicate with the staff at the school - but then we are lucky that we have Bhagi who is our contact person there is really helpful.

My Month in Paradise

Hi, I'm Kourtney from New Zealand. At the end of April 2015 I decided to travel and spend my time volunteering with the only wish to be able to help others. I was randomly given the opportunity to go to Sri Lanka, leaving in just a month, a destination that had never crossed my mind and a language and culture I knew nothing about. When I arrived in Sri Lanka I was apprehensive but soon eased into my new home for the next month, loving every second. I was teaching at the early childhood classroom within an orphanage creating memorable moments each and every day with the sweetest children. Although there was an obvious language barrier, we communicated through our play and the universal language of smiling. Through interactions I was also able to learn some Sinhala, in exchange for teaching them some English. My highlight during my trip though was taking the children on an excusing to the zoo and watching their eyes light up in utter delight at the animals and just being able to spoil them and giving them a day to remember for the rest of their lives. I fell in love with everything about Sri Lanka, the people, food, culture and the place, full of life and plenty to explore. In my month I made amazing friends from all over the world, I tried things I never thought I could do and travelled by myself managing my diabetes with ease. I would highly recommend volunteering in Sri Lanka to anyone, and without a doubt, I will one day be back in that beautiful country.

Sri Lanka

I was in Sri Lanka for 3 weeks. They were the best days of my life. It was the most beautiful country I had ever seen. You can swim in the blue ocean, lay on the white beach, walk true hills and visite the crowded cities. I loved the house, the people. I made friends for life. The volunteering experience was so good. You learn to put things in perspective. This trip made me a better person. If you hesitate between 2 countries pick Sri Lanka! You wont regret it, I promise!

A beautiful place

Hi there!
I am Hanna from Germany. I spent 8 weeks as a volunteer in Sri lanka. First I worked at the Cathedral Boys College for 5 weeks. My last 3 weeks I spent my time working with monks in a temple close to the camp. The Bridge Course, my project in the afternoon for my last weeks, includes teaching, playing and drawing with kids in Pallawatta.
It was the best time of my life. I felt in love with the country!
The nature is so varied. You can see the hills with tea plantages, climb up the Adams Peak, swim and snorchel in the beautiful sea and learn about the interesting culture. Travelling here is so easy and cheap. Just hopp on a bus! This was a great experience. As well as, meeting friendly people on the streets and spend time with the local people at the camp.
I really enjoyed my stay at there. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The food was great. Mmmh godak hodai!
Moreover, it was very clean and especially the chill lounge with a lot of matraces was great. We had a lot of fun with all the volunteers from all over the world.
I really recommend this programm feeling the culture and living in sri lanka.
Must do:
-Kandy, visiting the tea factory and tooth temple
-snorcheling in nilaveli, trinco
- Adams Peak
-whalewatching in Mirissa
- yala national park
-hikkaduwa beach
and make sure you talk to the local people. They are so courteous. Thus, they always tell you nice storys.
You learn a lot and get nice experiences.
Thanks Sri Lanka! <3
Tata, Hanna :)

Beautiful

I'm Sierra, I'm from the United States and I spent the month of July in Sri Lanka teaching English to monks in Colombo as well as being involved in the Women's Empowerment program in Pallawatta.
I had the most beautiful experience that I could ever imagine. When I left I sat in the airport and cried for about an hour because by the time I left, Sri Lanka felt like another home. Regardless, you have to be open minded. It's an entirely new world in Sri Lanka. Nothing is really like where you come from because it is a beautiful and unique culture. You will see things you've never seen before and you will learn so, so much. This volunteering experience will change your life and the way you look at the world for the better. I have made memories that will be close to my heart for the rest of my life. It is nothing and everything that you expect. Adventure. Travel. Lend a hand. You won't regret it.

Volunteer Sri Lanka

Where to start?
My name is Timothy Levick. I'm from Sydney Australia.
In August 2015 i started my journey around the world. I went to Sri Lanka for 4 weeks teaching English at an orphanage where I was teaching English, literacy, numeracy, art and crafts, the world, all about me and also sports, games and other activities.
I really loved having the opportunity to have this unforgetabbke and rewarding experience and would recommend it to anyone who wants to travel, meet new amazing people and also volunteer to help those less fortunate then yourself. Making a difference, and watching how much of an impact and change you have made on those children's lives. The happiest of times and watching them learn and development is incredible! Making such a strong relationship with them and seeing their beautiful smiles everyday was very rewarding. There are not enough words to ever describe how amazing this experience was.
My highlights was getting to really understand how the community works and the wonderful people.
The people that I met and the people that looked after us in Sri Lanka were incredibly amazing and I will never forget them. Not to mention the incredible beauty of the county! Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with amazing beaches to amazing and mountains. Sri Lanka is defintely a place I highly recommend to see!
There is sure not any faults or negative things to say about Sri Lanka and my time volunteering!

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE ❤️❤️❤️

Sri Lanka Experience 2015

Hi there,

My name is Jonne Uitenbroek and in the summer of 2015 I went to Sri Lanka for five weeks to do a volunteer and travel programme. I had just graduated from high school in the Netherlands and I wanted to do something special between my graduation and starting at college. After a long search on the internet I came across this programme with Idex and I applied straight away.

For me, this was the first time I would travel all by myself to a foreign country, so I was quite nervous. When I got there, however, I realized there was no need for me to be nervous: the people were so kind and helpful and the country itself is so beautiful. The staff were wonderful (especially the special people who cooked for us every day and the ones who helped us feel at home) and I met volunteers from all over the world, which was really neat.

I gave English and computerlessons to monks in the mornings and in the evenings I got to spend time with orphans in the Sri Vajira Child Development Centre. It was quite a culture shock, but in a good way; I loved every minute of it! While I taught the monks, they taught me a bit about their language and about buddhism, and the children at the nursery still have a special place in my heart.

In the weekends I got to be a tourist and I experienced the true Sri Lankan culture with a dance workshop, a visit to the Tooth Temple in Kandy, a visit to Yala national park and so much more. The nature is so stunning and everyone is nice, Sri Lanka is truely an amazing country!

So, all in all, don't hesitate to go to Sri Lanka with Idex! I had an experience of a lifetime that I will never forget...

Simply Amazing

Heya,
My name is Theresa, I am 18 years old and I come from the west of Germany.
After I finished school and got my A-levels I wanted to do something productive with my freetime, therefore I I searched the Internet because actually my plan was totally different from what I did in the end.
But first things first, I actually wanted to spend a year working and travelling in New Zealand, but shortly after I researched a bit, I found out that it was just too expensive for me. So, I searched for other things and found Sri Lanka!
Long story short: I spent 8 weeks in Sri Lanka and it was the best time I ever had (so far)!
I taught lovely (and SO funny) monks in the morning and then went on to the Sri Vajira Child Development Centre to play with and teach the nursery kids. Lovely little boys and girls who I still miss so much!
I literally fell in love with the whole of Sri Lanka! The environment is just so pretty, amazing beaches, delicious food (if you like rice and curry haha) and every weekend I organized a new trip to a city or whatever with the friends I found there :)

Pros of Sri Lanka:
- amazing people
- found lifetime friends
- learned to be more independent
- found my inner freedom, tanks to my monks
- swam with a shark
- fed an elephant and even a baby elephant
- saw almost every corner of lovely Sri Lanka
- learned a bit of the Sri Lankan language, dances and cooking
- saw the Perahera (google it, it's amazing)
- met beautiful Buddhist nuns
- AMAZING memories!
- now that I got friends in New Zealand, I can go there cheaper ;)

Do yourself a favour and visit this beautiful place!

xxx

Theresa, a happy traveller

volunteering sri Lanka

I've been to Sri Lanka colombo for 4 weeks to volunteer in an orphanage.
It was a really great experience. We taught the kids about colors and animals and stuff like that and it was a lot of fun! The house was pretty nice especially the lounge with all the mattresses on the floor.
Our coordinator is one of the funniest persons I ever met we really had a good time with him and the other volunteers!
All in all I had a great time in Sri Lanka and I can recommend it to everyone.

Good times

Hi! I'm Marjolein from the Netherlands. I went to Colombo Sri Lanka in September 2015 for 3 weeks and it was amazing! I was volenteering at a orphanage with childern from 2 years to 6 years old, that was fun. We learned the kids english, songs and games. Also we did teach the childern english at the school from the orphanage. At the weekends we were traveling, we did see a lot of beautiful things of the country. The house where we stayed was also very nice, enough space and peaceful, it did feel like home. The people from the organisation are very kind and helpful and the food is really good!
Thank you for an amazing time! :)

Volunteer in Sri Lanka and Nepal experience with IDEX

It was my second time with IDEX doing volunteer in Asia, and again, I had a really amazing experience here!
In Kathmandu, Nepal, I could see the country with a different view, specially after the earthquakes that happened in 2014. Also the projects helped me to demonstrated that even that you have some problems sometimes in life, you can see happiness in little things.
And in the end of my volunteer trip, I spent one week in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and everything was perfect to, the children and teachers from Sheffield School were so lovely and kind with me, that I will always remember this great experience! The accommodation and food was amazing, I really liked everything.
So I can tell that I had a good experience doing volunteer and IDEX always helped me with other weekends trips here, like Pokhara in Nepal, and Sigiryia in Sri Lanka. Thanks for everything!

A fabulous experience

Hi, I'm Emma from Denmark. I have now been here in Sri Lanka with IDEX for two weeks and I am going to stay for two more. I am here with my friend Charlotte and together we are volunteering at the boys collage project. I am really happy that i chose to be here. The boys at the school are SO sweet and happy. Their age are 5 to 11 years (1. to 5. grade). Our project is about teaching them English - everyday we have to plan the lessons for the next day. In grade 1 and 2 we draw, practice animals, colors, letters etc.- grade 3, 4 & 5 have workbooks.

Where we live: It is really nice to be in the house that we live in. It is very clean and comfortable and the food is great. Bhagi, Manuri & Anushi, who are our location managers, are really sweet and easy to be around. We fell very safe here. When Charlotte and I first came here we were only 4 volunteers in the house (one Swedish guy, one Australian guy and one Brasilia girl). To be honest this was less than we thought but it doesn't matter because people are so nice and we get very close (like a family) when we are only this many. Actually, now when we're here I prefer not to be too many. Next Monday three more people will come.

Weekends: In the weekends we plan different trips. It is totally up to you what you wanna do in your weekends - I would recommend to go see this beautiful country. Our first weekend we went to Galle and Yala National Park on safari - it was SO nice. This weekend we're going to Kandy to see temples and to visit an elephant orphanage.

I would defiantly recommend you to choose volunteering in Sri Lanka with IDEX.

New adventure

This was my first time in Asia and I feel like it couldn't have been better. I am now volunteering with Idex at day care at Vajira Orphanage and it is very rewarding to see kids smiling everyday. People in Sri Lanka are also very friendly, caring and are always willing to help. We have everything we need at the accommodation - great food and installations! I have also made lots of friends from around the world, who made the trip even more remarkable. I would definitively come back!

Great experience

I'm in the monk teaching project in Sri Lanka and I really likes it so far. It has been amazing to work with the monks because they share so much about their lives and religion. They are as well very interested in learning English so it is really funny to be a teacher for them.
We volunteers lives in a very nice house, it's clean and good food. The IDEX staff are great as well. They are taking really good care of us volunteers and helps us in every situation. I'm very pleased with my choice of going to volunteer work with IDEX.

What an experiance

I have completed the Idex volunteer course in Sri Lanka which i participated in for a total of 4 weeks. It was one of the most rewarding personal experience i have ever completed. Everything from the socializing with the other volunteers on extremely well planned and enjoyable weekend trips to the day to day work I completed at the Shefield International School was made easy, fun and enjoyable. A big shout out to the Idex staff, Anushi with the planing of the days and making sure my they ran smoothly as well as Bhagi (this guy is the best) who made me feel comfortable from the moment I stepped in the door and helped with anything and everything that i needed over the 4 weeks. I will forever have the memory of those kids smiling faces and the knowledge that i potentially helped improve some of their lives.
Again this experience has been so enriching but so easy as well. 5 Stars all round.

A perfect opportunity to teach abroad

I always wanted to work abroad as a teacher and this volunteer programme gave me the perfect opportunity to do this. It's so great to get an insight of the school system in an Asian country with all its strengths and weaknesses. I work in an International school, that means all the lessons are taught in English. Therefore the teachers and the pupils have very good English language skills and I can't contribute too much on that but of course it makes my volunteer work much easier as I can communicate very well with them. So far I mainly had to step in for absent teachers and had to be very spontaneous as I couldn't prepare the lessons and didn't know the level of the classes. But it gets better every day and it helps of course a lot if you have experiences as a teacher. The pupils are amazing and give so much back.
I love the volunteer house we are staying in, it's so big and has an amazing verandah. It reminds me a lot of my shared flat times and I like to spend the evenings with the other volunteers, enjoy the great food and play cards. It would be great if the age range of the volunteers would differ a bit more and there were more volunteers over 20 but I can also understand that this kind of programme attracts mainly young people after highschool. But we're a nice groupe anyway.
There is enough free time after the volunteer work to explore the area and a lot to do on the weekends.

Sri Lanka summer 2015

Hello, I'm Dasi from Israel. I travelled to Colombo Sri Lanka on August 2015 for 4 weeks and it was an amazing experience, one I'll never forget! I volunteered at a day care facility with little childern, who were adorable. I taught them English and also played games with them. During the weekends I would travel with the other volunteers across the beautiful Island. I was fortunate to visit many intersting places and meet very intersting people. The house where we stayed was spacious and clean, we each havd enough place to store our stuff. The food was great, they were very considerate when it came to my food sensitivity, and cooked specail stuff for me. The project manager was always avaliable for us and caitered our needs. He was very kind and thoughful, I felt in good hands and I didn't have to worry about getting lost or not finding my way. I recommned you all to follow this unique program. Its a great chance to give back to the world and also visit this unique country.
Enjoy,
Dasi

Sri Lanka - 2015

Hey,
My name is James Runham. I'm from New Zealand and in 2015 I went to Sri Lanka for 12 weeks teaching English to monks and teaching English/sports/gardening/art to the beautiful kids at an orphanage. I really loved having the opportunity to have this amazing experience and would recommend it to anyone who wants to travel, meet new amazing people and also help out through teaching. :)
Highlights for me was getting to really understand how the community works and the wonderful people that live there. The people that I met and the people that ran/looked after us in Sri Lanka were absolutely amazing and I will never forget them. Making friends with the monks and the kids from the orphanage is something I'll never forget and I am hoping to go back to see them all again. Not to mention the incredible beauty of the county! Stunning beaches to amazing mountains...! Sri Lanka is defiantly a must see! If you are thinking about going then I would absolutely recommend doing it. It's epic!! :)

Peace and love. ✌️
