  • Description

    What does the project do?

The Orphanage School was established in 1979 for children from throughout Luang Prabang and the Northern provinces and was founded as an orphanage for children from poor families irrespective of their ethnicity. The aim of the Orphanage School is to provide education, a home and a place of safety for the children.

    What's the project like?

This project is full of life and hope for the children at the orphanage, with over 500 children and nearly 50 staff you can just imagine how busy this place is! Every member of staff is there for the same reason; to promote the needs of children and to give them the best start in their educational life as possible, however the English skills of the staff are limited and their qualifications are few. Children at the orphanage are aged between 7 and 18 years old and many have families that are unable to look after them or come from at risk situations, many of the children do not have parents. If children have families then they usually spend time with their families during holidays where possible.

  • Highlights

    Trip Highlights:

    - Bring some light into the lives of underprivileged children
    - Explore and experience the area of Luang Prabang - how different from home!
    - Try the national dish Laap - a salad of minced meat or fish mixed with herbs, spices, lime juice and chilli.
    - If you are looking for a little more comfort then the single rooms with private bathrooms may just be for you!

  • Qualifications

Why does the project need volunteers?

The orphanage is run by nearly 50 staff but their qualifications are limited and resources are few, it does not receive sufficient funding from the government so your help is much needed to give the children the best start that you can. With your help, self confidence and easy going manner you can help make a difference in the lives of these children and make things more fun!

    Activities and schedule:

You will be working Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm. During the day you will be helping around the school with general maintenance, assisting with meal times, teaching the staff English and IT skills in their free time, maybe also helping in the school vegetable garden and when school finishes this is when the fun starts with the children! You will be teaching the children informal English, helping with their homework, fun activities such as sports and games or anything else you can think of! The school is very keen to teach art and creative activities so do not forget to bring your imagination with you!
