You can do more than just teach English on this project; you can be a sports coach, actor, entertainer and a friend too as you become fully immersed in community life. The great thing about staying on an island is that it is usually small enough to be explored (and you won't get too lost if you lose your way). The projects are based in Colombo which not only provides a great backdrop to your time here but is also a handy place from which to explore the rest of the island. Children on the project range from 7 to 18 and will all be eager to make the most of having a native English speaker around! Having you there will mean they can develop knowledge of the language through more varied means such as conversation classes, games and songs.
What does the project do?
In Sri Lanka we work with a children's home which also has a school attached teaching children aged from 4 to 18 years old. The school is a large school with nearly a thousand students and there may be 40 or more students in each class. This program focuses on teaching English to children from a young age, helping them to improve their foreign language abilities and pronunciation as they get older.
The ability to speak English greatly improves a person's job prospects in a developing country like Sri Lanka, and the chance to learn from a native speaker and improve their conversation and pronunciation is invaluable. This is therefore important work, helping to secure a brighter future with more opportunities for the children you're teaching.
What's the project like?
The project is based around Colombo which is a bustling, vibrant city close to the coast, where you will be well placed for travel to other parts of the island and will have easy access to local amenities.
* Helping improve the language skills of children on this beautiful island
* Learning about the challenges Sri Lanka has faced over the recent past
* Beaches, mountains, elephants and some of the friendliest people in the world
What kind of skills you need to go on this type of project:
Volunteers teaching in Sri Lanka should have a genuine love of children and young people, and an interest in education. Although you do not require any special skills, any experience working with children or young people would be valuable. Volunteers must be able to use their initiative and be motivated to work without guidance. Volunteers should be patient, hard-working, resourceful and imaginative.
Your role as a volunteer:
You may become involved in teaching English through a variety of methods, including formal learning using textbooks, conversation classes, games and songs. Some of the projects have the opportunity to teach IT skills alongside English, or as a method of practicing English. There may be the opportunity to become involved with drama or debates, and you might be asked to provide homework support for the children. You may also be required to help develop English teaching resources or improve the language skills of the permanent English teachers.
