Do you want to see the real Thailand? Too many visitors to Thailand turn into moths as soon as they land, uncontrollably drawn to Bangkok's neon lights and unable to break the spell before they leave. Bangkok is an amazing place and you should definitely sample it, but it's a bit like the hot Asian sun; better for you in small doses. The country may be popular with tourists but they tend to congregate in just a few hotspots, leaving the rest of the country ripe for exploration. On this project you will be using your TEFL certification to teach in 1 of 4 state primary schools on the coast, where class sizes are large but students are keen. There are few better places to teach English, away from the buzz of the bright lights with nothing but sandy beaches and Thailand's famous seafood to keep you company.
* Project details:
You will be teaching in one of 4 state primary schools in Rayong province, located on the coast around 3 hours East of Bangkok. These are government-run schools with between 100 and 300 students in each school. Class sizes are generally large but the students are keen to learn enjoy the interaction with volunteer teachers.
* Why the project needs volunteers:
Thailand has a proud history of never having been colonized by the West and as a result has maintained her own distinct language, culture and tradition. The government did not focus on English language in the past but in the last 15 years has put English language skills and the forefront of its educational programs. Many schools are keen to employ native English speakers but can not afford to employ good paid staff. You will find that individuals are very keen to learn.In many schools children do not actually get the chance to practice day to day conversation. Therefore, volunteers will need to focus on basic conversational English, which means helping students to speak simple English. By teaching young people English you will be able to make a positive impact on their lives and make more opportunities available to them particularly in Rayong province where tourism is a major employer.
* Getting under the skin of this amazing country
* Exploring the beaches and islands all along the Rayong coast
* Eating amazingly fresh seafood on the sea front in the evening - we're jealous already!
What kind of skills you need to go on this type of project:
You need to have a love of young people and be prepared to fully immerse yourself in the project. You will need to use your initiative, be patient and use your imagination. You need to be confident, resourceful and thrive on a challenge. You also need to be prepared to help out with a range of activities. Resume required for confirmation from the project.
Your role as a volunteer:
You will be teaching basic conversational English and helping the other English teachers. You will need to spend time planning lessons and make things as interactive and stimulating as possible. You will also be involved in arranging and running other activities such as crafts, sports and games. School resources can be limited, so volunteers may like to bring teaching materials such as simple reading books, postcards, photos and picture dictionaries.
