Do you love the excitement of snow boarding but hate the cold?
There is no need to tolerate bitter cold winds and frozen toes when you could be surfing and sandboarding in South Africa instead. On this two week action-packed adventure you will spend four days learning to surf, a full day on the sand dunes learning to sand board and then a week working with children in need. You also have plenty of free time to explore the fantastic Cape Town area. You could dive with sharks, hike through the stunning Cape region, sky dive...the outdoor adventure options are endless!
* What the project does and why it needs you!
The nursery school first started 15 years ago as a community center and was transformed into a nursery for the children in the area. The owner of the school works as a cleaner in order to fund the school's daily operating expenses. The school has a small staff and is always in need of an extra pair of hands and eyes to help care for and watch over the little ones.
* Day 1 - Cape Town
Welcome to Cape Town. Once you arrive into Cape Town International Airport you will be met by an i-to-i representative at the information counter at International Arrivals. You will be taken to our volunteer hostel in Fish Hoek and have an orientation at 5pm. After the brief introduction to South Africa you will have a delicious, traditional South African meal. The rest of the evening is free for you to settle in.
* Day 2 to 5 - Surfs Up!
Grab your board and hit the beach. For the next few days you will learn to surf like the pros (or at least try to!). After some introductory lessons, you will have plenty of practice time. By day four you should be ripping up the surf like an expert! If you get tired you can always take a break and lounge on the gorgeous sandy beach of Muizenberg, the South African birthplace of surfing.
* Day 6 - Sandboarding
Today you will go snowboarding African Style! Sandboarding is easy to learn and tons of fun. After a short lesson you will be ready to take off down the Atlantis Dunes at record speeds. And not to worry, there will be professional instructors on hand to ensure you have smooth landings. Unfortunately there are no lifts so you will have to hike your way back up to the top.
* Day 7 - Up to you!
Today you are free to explore Cape Town and the surrounding beaches, mountains, vineyards and oceans. Take a tour of the famous Stellenbosch wine region, go diving with sharks or visit the beautiful Kirstenbosch botanical gardens.
* Day 8 to 12 - Work with disadvantaged children
You will spend the next few days working with disadvantaged children at a nursery school. You will help the small staff with a variety of activities including feeding, reading to, singing with and teaching new songs to the children. Volunteers may also be asked to keep a watchful eye on the little ones while they sleep.
* Day 13 to 14 - Explore Cape Town
You have the weekend free to do and see anything you ran out of time to do last weekend. Take a trip to the Cape of Good Hope, visit penguins on Bolder's Beach or even head back to the surf.
* Day 15 - Back to the airport
Sadly today you will be taken back to the Cape Town International Airport in time for your flight home or onto your next adventure.
* Catching your first wave at Muizenberg Beach
* Speeding down the silky dunes on your sandboard
* Working with smiling children at a nursery near Cape Town
