  • Description

Constructive water management is rapidly becoming one of the world's most pressing topics. In order to meet the growing demand for high water quality for nature, consumption, agriculture and industries, new solutions must be developed, taking into account and balancing a whole set of different interests. HZ is located in a region that is perfectly suited for a study of Water Management. With a closed estuary, open waters, salt marshes and polders, Zeeland is ecologically renowned for its rich environment. The main water problems we have to deal with in society are pollution, flooding and shortages. On an international level, there are not enough water managers to cope with these problems. The water management programme at HZ is oriented towards a broad perspective of water. It combines knowledge of water ecology with water techniques (hydraulics). Students learn the basics of the aquatic environment, acquire the skills to examine the many characteristics of water, and gradually familiarize themselves with the technology that is applied in research and in controlling water systems.

  • Highlights

HZ Water Management programme provides students with theoretical education but also focusses on practical components. Two semesters work placement represent therefore an important part of the curriculum. Excursions to a variety of institutions and companies, fieldwork nearby and outside the Netherlands encourage the student to bring the acquired knowledge and skills into practice.

Being part of the programme, professionals share their actual experience highlighting current issues on water. By including topics on policy, legislation and management instruments students learn to approach water as an integral part of society.
